🎂🎶 Happy Birthday, Vince!...

We had a brilliant day celebrating Vince’s birthday at The Old School House, and with his love of music and his own history of playing in a band, there was only one way to celebrate – with a day full of music!

We started the morning with Beatles Bingo, although there was one important rule… anyone with a winning card had to shout “Ringo!” instead of Bingo! 😄

The music continued throughout the afternoon with a quiz, finishing the song lyrics and plenty of conversation about favourite songs and artists. It was lovely to see everyone getting involved and sharing memories along the way.

And no birthday celebration would be complete without plenty of cake! 🎂

A very Happy Birthday to Vince from everyone at The Old School House. We hope you enjoyed your music-filled day! 🎸🎵❤️

🌒 Solar Eclipse Tonight...

There’s something a little special happening in the skies over Devon this evening, with a partial solar eclipse visible from our part of the country.

The eclipse begins at around 6:18pm, reaching its maximum at approximately 7:15pm, before coming to an end shortly after 8:00pm. We’re hoping the weather stays kind so residents and staff can enjoy this unusual sight together.

Of course, we’ll be making sure everyone enjoys it safely. We’ll never look directly at the Sun and will only use suitable eclipse glasses or safe indirect viewing methods.

It should make for a lovely evening and no doubt spark plenty of conversation and memories along the way. 🌞🌙

A lovely mix of activities at The Old School House, with plenty of conversation, creativity and a little friendly competition along the way. 😊

We started with a game of Card Bingo, before continuing work on our colourful collage and adding more thoughtful words to our Tree of Positivity. Residents came up with some wonderful choices including kind, courageous, joyful, helpful, compassionate, brave and generous – all words that sparked some really positive conversations.

Music also played a big part in the day as we explored a Best Albums of the 60s book. Everyone had the chance to talk about their favourite artists and albums, and of course we had to listen to plenty of the songs too! 🎶 It was lovely hearing the different musical tastes around the room and sharing the memories and feelings that certain songs brought back.

Days like this are a great reminder that sometimes the best activities are the ones that encourage people to talk, reminisce, create and enjoy each other’s company. 💚

It is always wonderful to hear that a new resident has felt welcomed, comfortable and supported from the very beginning.

Following a short stay in hospital, this gentleman has been settling into life at The Old School House, enjoying the food, joining in with activities and, most importantly, beginning to feel more like himself again.

Thank you to his family for sharing such kind words. Feedback like this means a great deal to our team and reflects the care, encouragement and friendly welcome they work hard to provide every day. 💛

A busy and enjoyable afternoon at The Old School House as residents helped create our August orientation board, sharing memories and ideas about everything from summer holidays and trips to the beach, to gardening, cricket, ice cream and harvest time.

The conversations brought back plenty of lovely memories and encouraged some great interaction around the room.

We then moved on to our target game, with residents keeping score, enjoying a little friendly competition and, most importantly, winning plenty of chocolate prizes along the way!

A simple activity filled with conversation, concentration, laughter and lots of smiles. 🎯🍫☀️

🌍 Around the World at The Old School House...

Using our world map, we placed famous landmarks, animals and flags in their correct locations before putting our knowledge to the test with a “Where in the World?” quiz.

It was lovely hearing residents share stories about the places they have visited, lived and would love to see again. We then got everyone moving with a game of Boccia, followed by a cheerful singalong and seated movement session. 🎶

A brilliant day of learning, reminiscing, movement and good company!

💚 “You must not worry about me being here.”

We were incredibly touched to receive this wonderful five-star review from the family of a resident at The Old School House.

Kind words about our team are always greatly appreciated, but the most meaningful part of this review came directly from the resident herself. Hearing that she feels well looked after, comfortable and happy with the food is the greatest reassurance her family — and our team — could receive.

Creating a home where residents feel safe, respected and genuinely cared for is at the heart of everything we do. We also understand how important it is for families to leave after a visit feeling confident that their loved one is settled and in good hands.

🎳 A jam-packed day...

We started in the morning with a lively game of skittles, bringing out plenty of friendly competition and encouragement as everyone tried for that all-important strike!

Residents also tested their minds with shape and colour matching, finishing familiar proverbs, music quizzes and a fun game of famous faces bingo.

After all the activity, it was time to relax with a little nail care and enjoy a gorgeous, refreshing trifle.

A lovely mix of movement, memory games, music, pampering and treats, with smiles all around! 😃

🏖️ We’re bringing the seaside to The Old School House! 🌊

Not everyone is able to travel to the coast, but that doesn’t mean our residents should miss out on the sights, sounds and memories of a traditional day by the sea.

We’ve been busy preparing a dementia-friendly seaside experience right here in the home, complete with colourful bunting, sun hats, beach towels, shells and sensory rummage boxes. Residents have also helped us create the all-important packing list — from buckets and spades to sunglasses, suncream and, of course, ice cream!

Our seaside playlist is ready, the refreshments are in place and there was plenty of bubbles, games and laughter throughout the day. The different textures, familiar objects, music and seaside treats were a lovely way to encourage conversation and bring back memories of holidays and happy days spent by the coast.

We had a fantastic day at the seaside — without even having to pack the car! ☀️🐚

🌟 Our Starry Night collage is coming along beautifully at The Old School House! 🌙

Inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s famous Starry Night, our residents have been building their own colourful version using layers of tissue paper in rich shades of blue, turquoise and yellow.

The swirling sky and glowing stars are really beginning to take shape, and it has been lovely to watch the artwork develop piece by piece.
