Firefighters check their breathing apparatus before they need it.
Not because there is a problem. It’s because it helps them understand what resources they have available before things become difficult.
A lot of men do the opposite.
They keep going.
Keep working.
Keep carrying responsibility.
Keep telling themselves they’ll be fine.
Until something starts showing up.
Poor sleep.
Less patience.
More irritability.
Feeling tired even after resting.
Finding it harder to switch off.
The challenge is that pressure rarely arrives all at once. It usually builds gradually while life still looks fairly normal from the outside.
Sometimes the most useful question isn’t:
“Am I coping?”
It’s:
“Where is my pressure gauge sitting right now?”
Because nothing has to completely collapse before it deserves attention.
