Mauled by midgies, tormented by ticks, chomped by clegs?๐ŸฆŸ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ
Scotlandโ€™s summer wildlife is out in full force and theyโ€™re hungry!
Whether you're hiking the Highlands or just enjoying a garden BBQ, insect bites can be more than just annoying. Some can cause allergic reactions or even carry infections like Lyme disease.
๐Ÿงด Top tips to stay bite-free:
โœ”๏ธ Use insect repellent
โœ”๏ธ Wear long sleeves and trousers in grassy or wooded areas
โœ”๏ธ Keep food covered
โœ”๏ธ Avoid strong perfumes that attract bugs
โœ”๏ธ If you're camping, avoid pitching your tent near water like rivers or lochs
If you've been bitten and it's swollen, painful or not healing, get it checked. Your pharmacist can provide helpful advice or visit our bites and stings page on .

โ˜€๏ธ Feeling the heat?

Heat illness such as heatstroke happens in hot places, both indoors and outdoors. It can be caused by being active in a place thatโ€™s too hot.

Heat illness can range from mild to severe, and heat exhaustion and heatstroke are the most serious types.

Signs of heat exhaustion include:
โ€ข Tiredness or weakness
โ€ข Feeling faint or dizzy
โ€ข Headache
โ€ข Muscle cramps
โ€ข Feeling or being sick
โ€ข Heavy sweating
โ€ข Intense thirst
โ€ข Heat rash

If someone has symptoms of heat exhaustion:
โ€ข Move them to a cool or shaded place
โ€ข Remove unnecessary clothing - such as socks
โ€ข Encourage them to drink water or rehydration drinks
โ€ข Cool exposed skin with water and a fan

Most people start to feel better within 30 to 60 minutes if they're cooled down quickly. If symptoms don't improve, it could develop into heatstroke.

๐Ÿšจ Call 999 immediately if someone has:
โ€ข A very high temperature
โ€ข Confusion or lack of coordination
โ€ข Difficulty breathing
โ€ข A seizure
โ€ข Loss of consciousness
โ€ข Symptoms that aren't improving after 30 minutes of cooling down

Remember to drink plenty of fluids, avoid becoming too hot, and keep an eye on older relatives, young children and anyone with existing health conditions during periods of warm weather.

โธ Update: change to IT system postponed.

Polmont Park Medical Group was due to move to an alternative IT system, as part of a national programme replacing the clinical software used in general practice.

All practices in NHS Forth Valley had used EMIS PCS until earlier this year. Around eight practices have now migrated to an alternative system, Vision, procured by Scottish Government. These practices have experienced significant disruption due to the speed and performance of Vision. Recognising these concerns, NHS Forth Valley paused the roll out of Vision when we were due to migrate on 8th June.

During the pause, the software provider, OneAdvanced, has made significant attempts to address the performance issues. Migrations were due to resume with Polmont Park on 28th July.

Having very carefully considered feedback from the eight migrated practices, we donโ€™t believe that sufficient progress has been made with the software to allow us to migrate to the new system, without causing significant disruption to our staff and patients.

We are sorry for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused with issues around appointments or prescriptions.
