Small Moves = B I G C H A N G E 💪🏾
I’ve noticed 👀 that often, big changes happen in really small ways.
I think many of us humans want change to happen with a bang. We want the solution to our problem to arrive like a lightning bolt and suddenly everything feels different.
But in my experience, both personally and professionally, it rarely works that way.
It’s a collection of small choices. They might not make much of a wave in the moment, but over time they add up to something much bigger.
It could be…
• choosing half an hour’s rest instead of ticking another job off the never ending list. ✅
• choosing sleep before sending the emotional text. 💤
• leaving the house ten minutes earlier so getting caught in traffic doesn’t ruin your day. ⏰
• saying no to something because you know deep down you haven’t got the minerals for it. 🪫
• taking five minutes to stop and notice the good things in your life. 😍
• deciding it’s ok if the family eat the same meal two days on the trot. 🍲🍲
• pausing before speaking. 🤐
• going to bed a bit earlier. 🛌
• saying yes to fun. 🥳
• when someone asks, “How are you?”, choosing to say more than, “I’m fine.” 🗣️
• putting your phone down while someone is talking to you. 📱
• unfollowing someone on social media. ❎
• writing your thoughts and feelings down before having that difficult conversation. ✍️
• taking one night off from the dating apps. ⏸️
None of those things seem particularly game-changing on their own.
But they matter, and together…they can quietly change the direction you’re heading.
It’s one of the reasons I think therapy can be so valuable. As counsellors, we can sometimes be a mirror, helping people notice the changes they’ve made that they might not be aware of or might otherwise dismiss as “nothing really.”
And honestly… when a client casually talks about one of these little changes in a session, the urge to high-five them, chest bump them or give them a celebratory bear hug is STRONG!!!!!!
I refrain obvs!! 😝
But those are the moments that make me smile the most, because very often those tiny shifts tell me something much bigger is happening.
