Max Boyce was born as Maxwell Boyce in Glynneath, Glamorgan in 1943. His upbringing in the De Cymru (South Wales) mining community, along with his passion for Welsh rugby union, shaped his act into what we know it as today.

It was in the early years of the 1970s when Boyce undertook a mining engineering degree at what is now the University of South Wales. Once there, he began to put his act together - writing songs which combined humour with life in the mining communities of de Cymru. He would begin playing in pubs and clubs during this time.

It would be Boyce's third album, Live at Treorchy: 1974, which would be his breakthrough and this would be followed by his fourth record, We All Had Doctors' Papers: 1975. Both albums would be certified gold.

Much like contemporary Welsh folk singer Dafydd Iwan, who has become synonymous with the Welsh national football side, Max Boyce has become similarly synonymous with the Welsh rugby union team.

In 2023, in recognition of his 80th birthday, a statue of him was erected in his home town of Glynneath. He is a legend of Glynneath and a legend of Cymru.
