It's raining today but summer is not over yet and we need to be constantly vigilant about the sun, even in winter...

During lockdown, Kieran's mum noticed a suspicious mole on his forehead and urged him to get it checked. The biopsy results confirmed that he had melanoma.

The diagnosis came as a shock: “I sat in complete silence for a while before I told my wife as I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to tell her without crying."

Kieran had an operation to ensure any remaining cancer cells were removed and was later told he was cancer free.

Now, Kieran is keen to raise awareness about sun safety and to raise funds for our life-saving research.

“If you are concerned about suspicious looking moles or any other changes, you shouldn’t ignore them. Get them checked out by a GP."

Do you know the signs? Blood in the urine is the most common symptom, 80% of people with bladder cancer have blood in their urine. You may also experience problems passing urine or weight loss for no reason, pain in your back, lower tummy or bones. Please get in contact if you are experiencing any of these.

May is , and Emily Adams and Emma-Jayne Kelly, our bladder cancer clinical nurse specialists at CCC, are reminding people to be aware of symptoms, and highlighting the importance of early diagnosis.

“As with any cancer, if bladder cancer is detected early, there’s a greater chance that it can be treated, so being aware of the signs can be crucial.

Blood in your p*e is the most common symptom of bladder cancer - around 80 per cent of people with bladder cancer have some blood in their p*e as a symptom. It may happen just once or come and go. It may be bright red or darker red, and it can be just a small amount.

Other key symptoms include:
- pain, burning, stinging or itching when you p*e
- getting lots of urinary tract infections
- changes in your p*eing habits (p*eing more often or needing to p*e suddenly)
- losing your appetite and losing weight without trying to
- pain in your bones, back, or lower tummy
- feeling very tired for no reason and feeling generally unwell

Having any of these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have bladder cancer - they can be caused bBlan infection or stones in the bladder or kidney. But it is important to speak with your GP if you notice any of these changes.

It’s also important to remember that sometimes cancers do not present with the ‘usual’ signs and symptoms. If you notice any persistent or unexpected changes in your body that are not right for you, it is always best to talk to your GP and get them checked out.”

The sun is coming (we hope), remember to look after your skin.

‼️ THE INCIDENCE OF SKIN CANCER IN MEN IS GROWING AT TWICE THE RATE THAN THAT FOR WOMEN AND MEN ARE 69% MORE LIKELY TO DIE FROM THE DISEASE.

⚠ Despite these compelling statistics, men are less likely to cover up with clothing and wear sunscreen, check their skin for signs of change or visit their GP with any concerns.
