World Sepsis Day – Know the Signs

World Sepsis Day – 13 September

Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to an infection. It happens when the body’s immune system overreacts to an infection and starts damaging its own tissues and organs.

Sepsis can affect anyone, at any age, and can develop quickly. Knowing the signs and acting fast can save lives.

🚨 Signs to look out for

Symptoms can include:

Feeling extremely unwell or unusually sleepy
Confusion or difficulty speaking
Very fast breathing or difficulty breathing
A high or very low temperature, or feeling very cold
Fast heartbeat
Pale, mottled or bluish skin
Feeling faint or dizzy
Passing very little or no urine
A rash that does not fade when pressed

You do not need to have all of these symptoms to have sepsis.

⏰ Act quickly

If you or someone you care for has an infection and is becoming significantly more unwell, seek urgent medical help. Sepsis can progress rapidly, so early recognition and treatment are important.

If you think you or someone else may have sepsis, call 999 or attend A&E if it is an emergency.

For urgent medical advice that is not an emergency, contact NHS 111.

Know the signs. Trust your instincts. Act quickly.

World Su***de Prevention Day – 10 September 💛

You are not alone. Help is available.

World Su***de Prevention Day takes place on 10 September each year and is an opportunity to raise awareness of su***de prevention and encourage open conversations about mental health.

Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, at any stage of life. Sometimes, people who are struggling may not show obvious signs that they are finding things difficult.

Start a conversation

If you’re concerned about someone, simply asking “Are you okay?” can be the first step.

You don't need to have all the answers. Listening without judgement, showing that you care and encouraging someone to seek support can make a real difference.

If you are struggling with your mental health or experiencing thoughts of su***de, please reach out for support. Talk to someone you trust or contact a healthcare professional.

💛 Support is available

Samaritans
If you need someone to talk to, Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

📞 Call 116 123 – free from any phone

You can also visit the Samaritans website for further support.

At Uni-City Medical Centre, our team is here to listen and help you access appropriate support.

A conversation can change a life. Don't be afraid to ask. Don't be afraid to talk.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please seek urgent medical assistance.

❤️ Know Your Numbers – Blood Pressure Week

Do you know your blood pressure numbers?

High blood pressure often has no obvious symptoms, but if left untreated, it can increase your risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

This Blood Pressure Week, we’re encouraging our patients to Know Your Numbers and take a few minutes to check their blood pressure.

🩺 What do the numbers mean?

Your blood pressure reading has two numbers:

Systolic pressure – the higher number, when your heart pumps blood around your body.
Diastolic pressure – the lower number, when your heart rests between beats.

Knowing your usual blood pressure can help you and your healthcare team identify any concerns early.

💙 Take action today

If you haven’t checked your blood pressure recently, why not make it a priority this week?

You can have your blood pressure checked at the practice, at a pharmacy, or using a validated home blood pressure monitor.

Know your numbers. Look after your heart. Protect your future.

If you are concerned about your blood pressure or would like advice, please contact the practice or speak to your local pharmacist.

💙 Pulmonary Fibrosis Awareness Month 💙

🫁 Know the signs:
• Persistent dry cough
• Shortness of breath
• Tiredness and fatigue
• Reduced ability to exercise
• Unexplained weight loss

Symptoms can develop gradually, so it’s important not to ignore ongoing changes in your breathing.

👉 If you have a persistent cough or unexplained breathlessness, please contact the practice for advice.

Don’t ignore changes in your breathing. 💙

Vascular Disease Awareness Month
Know the signs of vascular disease ❤️

Vascular disease affects the blood vessels that carry blood around your body. It can affect your arteries and veins and, if left untreated, can lead to serious health problems.

Some vascular conditions can develop gradually, so knowing the warning signs is important.

Symptoms to look out for

Depending on the condition, symptoms may include:

🦵 Pain or cramping in your legs when walking, which improves with rest
🧊 Cold, numb or pale feet or hands
💙 Changes in the colour of your skin
🩹 Wounds or ulcers that are slow to heal
🦵 Swelling or heaviness in the legs
❤️ Chest pain or pressure
⚠️ Sudden weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking
Reduce your risk

Some vascular conditions are linked to risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight and lack of physical activity.

You can help protect your vascular health by:

🚭 Not smoking
🥗 Eating a balanced diet
🚶 Staying physically active
❤️ Keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol under control
🩺 Attending regular health checks
💊 Taking prescribed medication as advised

If you notice persistent or unexplained symptoms, please contact the practice for advice.

Look after your blood vessels – healthy circulation is an important part of your overall health. ❤️

🩺 Do you know the signs of Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes can develop quickly, particularly in children and young people. Knowing the warning signs could help someone get the treatment they need sooner.

🚨 Look out for the 4 Ts:

💧 Toilet – needing to wee more often, especially at night
🥤 Thirsty – being extremely thirsty and unable to quench your thirst
😴 Tired – feeling unusually tired or lacking energy
📉 Thinner – losing weight without trying

Other signs can include blurred vision, increased hunger, tummy pain, nausea or vomiting.

⚠️ If you or someone you know has these symptoms, seek medical advice promptly.

Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar or being overweight. It is an autoimmune condition where the body stops producing insulin.
