Many conscious, spiritual leaders and practitioners believe in the myth that their calling can be accomplished. I'm going to say it can't. Not because it's not doable, not because it doesn't deliver outcomes — that are fantastic, wonderful. It's because our true calling is made up of three components.

First component is: what is the learning and growth that we are here to do?

Second one is: what is the gift we are here to bring to humanity and to the world?

And the third one is: what is the world ready and able to receive from us?

I’m guessing you’d agree with me that all three of those things keep evolving.

So let's say what we're here to learn is compassion, which is one of the things I'm here to learn. Compassion is an endless growth path. There's always deeper to go. So if I believe that I can get to the end of that path, I'm missing the point.

Equally, what's the gift I'm here to give? Let's suppose the gift I'm here to give is also compassion and empathy. The kind of compassion and empathy that I'm able to give is going to constantly evolve if I'm growing and evolving.

And then if we look at the world, the kind of compassion and empathy that the world needs, that humanity needs, is also going to keep changing and shifting as changes happen in the world.
So you can see that none of those three actually have a destination.

So the reality is that our capacities and our learning and our contribution keep expanding forever when we're really connected to them. And what the world needs from us keeps shifting and changing as well.

So this is why the myth that our calling can be accomplished is actually exactly that — a myth.

Byron has been interested in the fields of philosophy and psychology since 1991. He had a debilitating stutter his whole life but developed a growth mindset, trained to become a therapist, coach and has now developed his own therapeutic approach. Byron is also a trainer and author but would firstly describe himself as a philosopher.
