The clocks go back tonight, and everyone gets an extra hour. Here's a fair trade for ten minutes of it. Day 1 of Unfrozen asks for a number from 1 to 10 and how he slept. Then there's a short read and one practice with the steps laid out, and that's him done in about ten minutes. Nobody asks for an essay. Unfrozen is a 90-day mental health plan for men, two pages a day. In the book's words, "It's a training plan for the inside."

No highs. No lows. Good news lands flat and bad news doesn't touch the sides.

It's common in men, and easy to miss, because the one thing it doesn't feel like is a problem. It just feels like nothing.

I spent fifteen years numbing my way through it, so this one's personal. Why it happens, when it's worth getting help, and small ways to start feeling again.

No highs, no lows, just flat. Why emotional numbness happens, why it is common in men, and small daily steps to start feeling again. From Lancashire.

Day 12 of Unfrozen is called Shoulders Down. The bracing that gets a man through a hard week is armour, and when the pressure runs for months, the armour stays on. It shows up as the stiff neck, the sore back and the short fuse at the end of the day. Most men only find it on the drive home, with both hands gripping the wheel.

Most men know the moment. The light goes off, the brain switches on, and the same worry starts doing laps. Day 11 of Unfrozen gives that loop somewhere to go. Before bed, he writes down up to three worries in a few words each, then ticks what happens to each one: a small step, park it, not mine to carry, or let it go. It's a few words, and they're for nobody but him. The book closes, and the breath slows to in for four, out for six. If the loop starts again, it's already parked, so he goes back to counting. Unfrozen is a 90-day mental health plan for men, two pages a day.

Most men carry the whole day straight into the house and sit it down at the tea table. This is Day 2 of Unfrozen: a double breath in, then one long breath out. As the book puts it, "It's the same sigh your body does on its own after a long day; you're just doing it on purpose." Three rounds take under a minute, and the car on the drive, with the engine off, is the place to do them. The full guided version is free on our YouTube.

Tea's eaten and the telly's on. Somebody asks how his day was, he says "fine", and he means it as far as it goes. At half ten he's lying in the dark, replaying a meeting and drafting an email he'll never send. Nobody taught most men how to finish a shift on the inside. His body got home hours ago, while his head is still sat at the desk with the monitor on. That gap between clocking off and switching off is where the week quietly drains a man. This week, we're talking about closing it.

Quick one. When the pressure's on, where does it land first? Jaw, chest, stomach or shoulders?

One word in the comments. There's no right answer. Knowing where yours lands is how you catch it early, before it turns into a headache, a short fuse or a 3am wake-up.

You go to work. You pay the bills. You answer the messages. And underneath all of it, nothing.

There's a name for that. It's called functional freeze, and I lived in it for years without knowing it had one. From the outside you look like you're coping. From the inside the lights are on and nobody's home.

I've written up the signs men tend to miss, why one good weekend doesn't shift it, and three small things you can try tonight.

Going to work, paying the bills, feeling nothing. The signs of functional freeze men miss, and a 90-day plan for it, ten minutes a day.

Every man has a mate like Dave. Something's happened, and he's gone quiet.
The lads mean well. Phil did something different.
Unfrozen is a 90-day mental health plan and guided journal for men. Two pages a day, 10 to 25 minutes: a short read, a practice for breath, body or head, and one small action out in the world. Nobody asks him to write an essay or pour his heart out.
Keep it for yourself, or slide it across the bar to a mate who isn't himself.

For men who see their kids at weekends, the stretch from Sunday night to Friday is a long one. This gives a man something for every day of it.

Day 1 takes about ten minutes. He marks a number from 1 to 10, picks a feeling word, notes how he slept and reads for two or three minutes. Then he does one practice, shown step by step, and one small thing out in the real world, such as getting some daylight or texting a mate.

Unfrozen is a 90-day mental health plan for men, two pages a day. There is no essay to write, and nobody asks him to sit cross-legged. If he misses a day, he picks up where he left off.
