💜Love this graphic from Amy Newglade Counselling. It really speaks clearly to how ND folk can be impacted from environments that are misinformed or non-inclusive.
💻I've written 2 blogs that pick up these themes - one on masking and the other on negative feedback. If you're interested, both in the comments ⬇️
I've just finished this graphic to help put into visuals what I see within my client group. *Note this is a reflection on my own personal and professional experiences of late identifying neurodivergent individuals and does not reflect everyone's experience of being neurodivergent *
Negative Experience - Neurodivergent people experience frequent misunderstandings and miscommunications in our lives. This often means that our needs go unmet and we build up traumatic memories.
Masking - We try desperately to "get it right" by masking, suppressing natural urges and people pleasing to the extreme.
Self Blame - We believe we are the problem and there is the resulting self blame, guilt and shame to deal with. The idea that we are not ok to be ourselves.
Hypervigilance - Our brains become hypervigilant and our bodies hyper aware to ensure we don't get things wrong again.
Intensifying Stress - heightened nervous system response leads to higher stress, anxiety and burnout. This makes us more likely to code negative experiences as traumatic.
Especially for those who have not been diagnosed or identified as neurodivergent, this cycle can repeat, escalating in intensity and offering no answers. It is also the case for people who know they are neurodivergent but are not getting the consistent, affirming support that they need.
This is why self awareness, neurodivergent education and ND affirming therapy is so important - we can only start to break the cycle once we understand what is happening.
