Missing you comes in waves.

Nobody warns you some days the wave doesn't recede.

Some days it just keeps coming, one after another,

no gap to catch your breath in between.

You think you've learned to swim in this by now.

You've survived the anniversaries, the holidays, the ordinary Tuesdays

that turned out not to be ordinary at all.

But some days the water doesn't care what you've survived before.

It just pulls you under anyway.

Today is one of those days.

I'm not swimming. I'm not even treading water.

I'm just letting it hold me under for a while,

because fighting it today would take more than I have.

Tomorrow I'll come up for air again....

I always do.

But today, I'm drowning,

and I'm done pretending that's the same thing as doing fine.
