🤔 What Does an Osteopath Actually Do?

One of the most common questions we're asked is:

"Do osteopaths just crack backs?"

The answer is no!

Osteopaths are trained healthcare professionals who assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal problems affecting muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves.

At Nene Valley Osteopathy, treatment often includes:

✔ Hands-on treatment to help reduce pain and improve movement
✔ Soft tissue techniques for tight or sore muscles
✔ Joint mobilisation and stretching
✔ Medical acupuncture where appropriate
✔ Rehabilitation exercises to improve strength and flexibility
✔ Advice on posture, movement and activity

We regularly help people with:

• Back and neck pain
• Sciatica
• Shoulder problems
• Hip and knee pain
• Sports injuries
• Headaches and migraines
• Persistent aches and pains

But perhaps most importantly, we don't just look at where it hurts.

We look at how your body moves as a whole and work with you to identify the factors that may be contributing to your symptoms, helping you not only recover but stay active and healthy for the future.

Whether you're struggling with a recent injury or something that's been bothering you for years, we're here to help.

👋 Hi, I'm Georgina, founder of Nene Valley Osteopathy.

As we've had lots of new followers over the past few weeks, I thought it would be good to introduce myself again.

For 20 years, I've been helping people in Raunds and the surrounding area recover from pain, injury and movement problems.

One thing I've learned over the years is that pain doesn't just affect your body. It affects your confidence, your hobbies, your sleep, your work and your quality of life.

Whether you're struggling with back pain, neck pain, headaches, sports injuries or those everyday aches and pains that seem to keep coming back, my aim is simple:

✅ Help you feel better
✅ Help you move better
✅ Help you stay active for longer

As a Registered Osteopath and qualified Personal Trainer, I combine hands-on treatment with practical advice, rehabilitation and exercise support to help you achieve lasting results.

No two people are the same, which is why every treatment plan is tailored to your individual needs and goals.

If you've been putting up with pain for longer than you'd like, I'd love to help.

🚨 5 Signs Your Back Pain Shouldn't Be Ignored

Most episodes of back pain settle within a few weeks, but sometimes your body is telling you it needs a little extra help.

Here are 5 signs it's worth getting your back pain assessed:

1️⃣ It's been there for more than 2 weeks.

2️⃣ The pain is travelling into your buttock, leg or foot.

3️⃣ You're struggling to sleep comfortably.

4️⃣ It's affecting work, hobbies or exercise.

5️⃣ The pain keeps returning, even after it settles.

Too often, people wait months hoping the problem will disappear on its own. The longer pain persists, the more it can begin to affect strength, mobility and confidence.

The good news? Most common causes of back pain respond well to the right combination of treatment, movement and rehabilitation.

If your back is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, don't just put up with it.

🌀 Why does pain in one area sometimes seem connected to a completely different part of the body?

One possible explanation lies within something called the Spiral Line.

The Spiral Line is one of several fascial chains described in anatomy. Rather than viewing muscles as isolated structures, fascial chains recognise that muscles and connective tissues work together as interconnected systems throughout the body.

The Spiral Line wraps around the body in a corkscrew-like pattern, connecting structures from the foot, up the leg, around the pelvis, through the trunk and into the neck and head.

Its role is to help:
✔️ Maintain balance and posture
✔️ Control rotational movements
✔️ Transfer forces efficiently through the body
✔️ Stabilise us during walking, running and sporting activities

When part of this chain becomes overloaded, stiff or weak, it may influence movement elsewhere along the line. This is why a problem in the foot or hip can sometimes contribute to discomfort in the lower back, ribs, shoulder or even the neck.

As osteopaths, we don’t just look at where the pain is. We assess how the whole body moves and functions together. Sometimes the area causing the problem isn’t the area where you feel the symptoms.

Understanding these fascial connections helps us build a bigger picture of your movement patterns and identify factors that may be contributing to pain or recurring injuries.

Have you ever noticed that treating one area of your body seemed to improve symptoms somewhere completely different?

🦵 Ever wondered why pain, tingling or numbness can travel down your leg?

One of the things osteopaths assess during an examination is something called a dermatome.

Dermatomes are areas of skin supplied by specific nerves that exit the spine. Each nerve root is responsible for sensation in a particular region of the body. In the lower limb, these nerves travel from the lower back and can affect areas such as the thigh, calf, foot and toes.

For example:
🔹 L4 may affect the inside of the calf and ankle
🔹 L5 commonly affects the outer leg and top of the foot
🔹 S1 can affect the outer foot and little toe

If a nerve becomes irritated, compressed or inflamed, symptoms may be felt along the pathway of that nerve, causing:
⚡ Tingling
⚡ Numbness
⚡ Burning sensations
⚡ Pins and needles
⚡ Pain travelling into the leg or foot

Understanding dermatomes helps osteopaths identify whether symptoms may be originating from the lower back, rather than the area where the pain is actually being felt.

This is why a thorough assessment is so important. A painful foot, calf or knee isn’t always a problem in the foot, calf or knee!

By assessing nerve function, movement patterns and the whole body, osteopaths can build a clearer picture of what’s causing your symptoms and create an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Have you ever experienced pain, tingling or numbness travelling down your leg?
