International Day of Friendship

We often underestimate the benefits of friendships. To most of us, friendships bring something special that can support our wellbeing.

-Connection over shared values and/or interests.
-Opportunity to be listened to / an empathising ear
-Laughter, fun and joy

What do your best friendships mean to you?
What do you think the benefits to your mental and physical wellbeing are?

As the school holidays have arrived, we know a lot of you will be juggling looking after children / grandchilden whilst looking after elderly loved ones.

We know the summer holidays can be both a special time for family connection but it can also be a hard period of life being a carer from both ends of the family tree!

This is your friendly self care reminder! Don't forget to look after yourself a little bit too during the crazy 6 weeks of summer holidays!

Self care - it can be done 24/7 (hence the end date of self care month is 24th July!

Self care can be:

Prioritising your sleep
Keeping hydrated
Eating well
Doing your physio exercises
Doing breathing exercises

It’s whatever supports your physical and mental well-being.

But don’t do it once a year, find some small things to incorporate DAILY!

Keeping hydrated is vital for our bodies, including both physical and mental health!

- Sipping water throughout the day helps your body to absorb water more steadily

- Caffeined drinks can still count towards your daily 6-8 glasses of fluid, but are worth having in moderation, combined with other fluids throughout the day

- In the summer heat, it's even more important so it's a good idea to think about how you will manage your daily fluid intake, such as putting a flask in the fridge overnight to keep cool for the following day, having a straw so its easier to sip a drink or a jug by your side.

It's that time of year when a lot of our staff are taking their holidays to spend with their loved ones and families.

Time away from the normal routine can be such a beneficial time for us to reflect, relax and recouperate from the busy lives a lot of us have.

We always try to reduce any disruption as much as possible but if any of our clients have holidays booked, then if you can let us know in advance so we can plan our schedules over the summer period.

Summer is a great time to get out and about (even if that means sitting in the shade).

But is your or your loved one's disability getting in the way of all things summer?

Maybe they're are missing doing the gardening but just can't safely get on / of the ground to do the weeding anymore.

Or, maybe you can't get in and out of the car easily to go out and about.

Whatever, your summer goal is, it's not too late to start your rehabilitation and therapy.

Living with a disability is more than just living with the physical struggles of everyday life.

The challenges with standing, walking, even talking or much more obvious but what about the emotional side of living with a disability?

What about the carers' supporting the person with a disability?

Having been an unpaid carer for someone with a disability several times in my life, I can say one thing - the emotional strain on the person and the carer are very real!

'Back in the day' people weren't offered support, councelling, psychology so those emotional struggles were something that someone just had to put up with. But, we are so happy that is still not the case.

Our team want to support you to achieve your goals by looking at the whole of you, including your physical and mental health and yes talking about it can help. If you have deep routed challenges that need some more expert consideration, we have Clinical Psychology in our team who can support you.
