It's meet our team time again - Here's Stuart - on of our amazing Senior Rehab Assistants

Stuart started working for the NHS in 1996 at Runwell hospital working within elderly mental health having built up over 20 years of experience in this area. Ha has always worked around therapists on the wards and felt this was the area that he would like to specialise. So he moved into the discharge to assess role at Basildon hospital in the community, progressing into physio and OT teams within the NHS and in the private sector where he found a love for helping people regain their confidence, strength, seeing them improve and regaining their independence in their own home. Stuart prides himself on being able to encourage and install his positive belief in people’s ability even if they can’t yet see it themselves. Stuart says “the pride I get in my job in helping people regain their independence is immeasurable and I love sharing the skills I’ve acquired with patients and their families”.

We were hoping to raise £1000, so was pleasantly surprised by the generosity of the local businesses donating prizes as well as how everyone bought so many raffle tickets!

We know how much local charities rely on donations so we know just how much this money will prove beneficial to Headway Essex

Conserving energy

Whatever the medical condition or reason, we all need to learn to slow down sometimes and look after our energy.

This is how I do my laundry when I’m shaving a low energy day.

How do you do your laundry when your battery is running low on energy?

We had a great morning yesterday at Pinetree care home offering a Falls Prevention talk today residents, families, staff and carers’.

Falls are extremely common in the over 65’s - as many as one in 3 !

Because falls can have devastating impacts, we want to prevent them in the first place rather than try to recover with the trauma afterwards!

What a fabulous fundraising event we had Friday night in aid of in Rayleigh.

Headway provide vital support for those with brain injuries and we heard from one our clients who showed just how much Headway and Reclaim Mobility have supported her in her recovery post brain injury. She even amazed us with the most ballroom dance with her husband which had been the first public dance she had done following her injury.

We had aimed to raise as close to £1K as possible and am pleased to say we raised over £1400!

We couldn't have done that without Brian's Live Music / Brian Sangwin, who enjoys raising money for charity and thank you to all the local businesses across the District that donated prizes for our raffle.

Including Rayleigh Spice restaurant voucher, Jo's massage & Reflexology voucher, New Body Gym, Reclaim, Alison Drew's avon produts, The Mill Cafe, our colleague Stuart Lyons (slyonscreativ), Joanne Shepherd, The florist just because rayleigh, Costa Coffee, Asda, Essence of Life. Sorry if I've missed anyone else!

Mental health - why do people with 'physical' impairments / disabilities benefit from Psychological support?

When we live with a chronic condition(s) it can have an impact on much more than just physical health. Living with pain or fatigue for example, it can impact our mood, it can lead to social isolation and can reduce our abilities to enjoy our favourite day to day activities.

Physical and mental health are not seperate (like healthcare professionals used to think). They are integrated and a problem with one, can and will impact the other.

If your physical health is getting your down, making you anxious or stressed, then please remember how your mental health is just as important as your physical health.

So of course to support your mental health can help you to cope better, increase your awareness of your priorities, reduce anxiety, improve mood and much more.
