“It’s been life-changing.” 💗

Those were the words of one of my lovely clients after completing her 12-week pelvic floor programme.

In her 70s, she had lived with constipation for pretty much her entire life. Within the first few weeks of the programme, that had resolved.

She had also been living with urge incontinence for many years — that sudden overwhelming need to get to the toilet, with the worry that she might not make it.

Now? No more urge incontinence.

She can enjoy a two or three-hour lunch with friends without worrying about an accident.

She can get the bus home without planning everything around a toilet.

And she can even put her key in the front door without that familiar “key-in-the-lock” urgency and flooding.

It might sound like a collection of little things.

But when you’ve spent years worrying about your bladder and bowels, getting that freedom back is anything but little.

One very happy lady — and a lovely reminder that being in your 70s doesn’t mean you just have to put up with pelvic floor problems. 💗

🍆 LADIES… COULD THE MAN IN YOUR LIFE HAVE A PELVIC FLOOR PROBLEM?

Most of what I talk about here is women’s pelvic health.

But here’s something you might not realise…

Men can have pelvic floor dysfunction too.

And some of the symptoms might sound surprisingly familiar.

🚽 Urgency and frequency
💧 Urinary leakage
💦 Dribbling after they’ve finished weeing
🌙 Getting up repeatedly during the night
💩 Bowel difficulties
😣 Pelvic pain or tension
🍆 Problems getting or maintaining an er****on
🏥 Leakage following prostate surgery

Just like women, a man’s pelvic floor isn’t simply something that needs to be stronger.

It needs to be able to contract, relax and coordinate properly with breathing, movement and changes in pressure.

And that’s why many of the things I already teach women can be just as relevant to men:

Pelvic floor awareness and exercises, bladder retraining, managing urgency, bowel health, breathing and pressure management, relaxation, movement and lifestyle changes.

There’s even research showing that pelvic floor rehabilitation can improve erectile function in some men.

So perhaps pelvic floor health shouldn’t really be thought of as a women’s issue at all.

Different anatomy. Same pelvic floor principles.

And if you’re reading this thinking…

“Actually, my partner does struggle with some of those things…”

Maybe his pelvic floor deserves a little attention too. 🍆

💪 PREHAB – it’s not just for hips and knees!

If you’re waiting for a hip or knee operation, you may already know how important it is to keep moving and maintain as much strength as possible beforehand.

And that’s something we’re already doing at Move to Improve! 😊

But did you know the same principle can apply to your pelvic floor?

Many of the exercises we do in class are already helping to support your pelvic floor too.

And if you’re preparing for pelvic surgery or another pelvic floor intervention, just as with a hip or knee operation, there can be real value in understanding and preparing your pelvic floor beforehand, rather than waiting until afterwards to start your recovery.

The same applies to childbirth – another huge physical event that we can prepare our pelvic floor for.

So whether it’s your hips, knees or pelvic floor…

❤️ Don’t wait until AFTER to start preparing your body.

And if you need more specific pelvic floor support, I also offer Pelvic Floor Puzzle Workshops and personalised pelvic floor programmes. 💗

📮 HAD ONE OF THESE THROUGH YOUR DOOR?

I did… and the words on the front caught my attention:

“Millions of women have bladder leaks. Let’s talk about it.”

Great! 👏 Let’s talk about it.

But did anyone else hope that “let’s talk about it” might mean talking about WHY you’re leaking — and what you can actually do to improve it or even STOP it?

Instead, inside are vouchers for free pads and pants.

Now, continence products absolutely have their place. If you need them, you need them — and having good products available is important.

But pads manage the symptom. They don’t address why the leaking is happening.

And this is where I think we need to change the conversation.

💧 Bladder leaking is common — but that doesn’t mean it should simply be accepted as a normal part of being a woman, having babies or getting older.

Your pelvic floor is so much more than “just do your Kegels”.

It’s about understanding how your pelvic floor works with your breathing, movement, bladder, bowel, core and pressure within your body — and importantly, whether your pelvic floor actually needs strengthening in the first place.

So YES…

Millions of women have bladder leaks.
Let’s talk about it.

But let’s talk about more than which pad to wear.

Let’s talk about what we can do to help women need them less. 🙌

If you need help improving symptoms then please get in touch.

Possibly one of my favourite bits of client feedback! 😂

This lovely lady came to me with pelvic floor symptoms, but she also had a lot going on emotionally and was experiencing anxiety.

And you could see the tension she was carrying in her body — shoulders practically up around her ears.

The pelvic floor doesn’t work in isolation. When we’re constantly tense, stressed or bracing, those muscles can struggle to fully let go too.

So for her, more squeezing and strengthening wasn’t what she needed.

We worked on understanding why her pelvic floor was reacting this way, correcting her breathing, gentle movements and stretches, and some simple relaxation strategies she could use at home.

As part of her full programme, I was also able to tailor her Winback Therapy to help gently warm the tissues, support circulation and encourage relaxation — while she had 20 minutes to simply lie back, chat and offload some of what was going on.

By the end of her programme, she was really happy with the improvement in her symptoms.

But perhaps more importantly, she now understands her own pelvic floor — what tends to trigger her symptoms and what she can do if they start creeping back.

And apparently I managed all of that without annoying her. 😂

I’ll take that as a win! 💗

Finally I think I’ve found the trick - get up and get to the gym before my brain has a chance to talk me out of it!
😂
Now, I do know a fair bit about exercise — I’ve been a fitness instructor for years and movement is a big part of the work I do with my pelvic floor clients. But that doesn’t mean I leap out of bed excited to go to the gym!

I’m not training to look a certain way or chasing a six-pack. I’m doing enough to feel well, stay strong and look after the body I want to carry me through the next few decades.

I know the WHY… I just still have to persuade myself to actually DO it! 🤣

Zoom in to the image for some reasons why you really should work on your strength 💪

🌸 Living with pelvic pain shouldn’t just be something you’re expected to put up with.

Conditions such as endometriosis can cause ongoing pelvic pain that affects far more than just your body — it can impact exercise, work, sleep, relationships and everyday life.

This is one of the areas where Winback Therapy may be able to help.

Using gentle, non-invasive technology, Winback can be used as part of pelvic health care to help calm pain and support the tissues and muscles around the pelvis — without any intimate or internal treatment.

For women experiencing persistent pelvic pain, sometimes the first step isn’t about strengthening the pelvic floor at all.

It’s about calming things down, reducing tension and helping the body feel safe enough to relax. 🌸

I offer this treatment at Spinal & Natural Healthcare Centre in Benfleet. Contact myself or the centre to book a consultation.

⚠️ ‼️WARNING! This may shock you… ‼️⚠️

Massage could be helping your pelvic floor more than you realise.

And before you panic… I won’t be reaching for the rubber gloves! 🧤 😉🤣
I’ll explain why below…

But first… today is my last massage clinic before I take a couple of weeks off to recharge… and give my hot stones a well-earned holiday too!☀️

My September diary is now open if you’d like to book in.

Now… back to those rubber gloves… 🧤🧤

Many people assume pelvic floor health is all about intimate examinations.

It isn’t.

Many of the women I see with bladder leaks, prolapse or pelvic pain are holding tension throughout their whole body.

A tight jaw.
A stiff neck.
Shoulders up by your ears.
Aching hips.
A grumpy lower back…

When we’re stressed or in pain, we don’t just tense one muscle… we tense everywhere. That can include the pelvic floor too.

Even restrictions through your lower back, hips, thighs and feet can affect how your pelvis moves and how your pelvic floor functions.

That’s why I don’t just treat the sore bit.

💗 I treat the whole person.

Because everything in the body is connected. That’s holistic health.
