As Therapists, we are trained to recognise when a client may be presenting with a ‘red flag’ that may require further medical intervention. A few examples include unrelenting night pain, problems with dizziness or vision or an unexplained weight loss.

We also recognise that there are certain pathologies, conditions and medications that are occasionally a general contraindication (treatment is not appropriate on that day) or more often, a local contraindication (avoiding a certain area of the body). Examples of a general contraindication include severe, unexplained pain or a contagious illness. Examples of a local contraindication include sunburn or a fracture.

For some pathologies, conditions and medications, it may be appropriate to make treatment modifications. This may include altering the positioning, depth of pressure, duration of the treatment or massage medium used. For example, a woman that is pregnant being positioned in the side lying position, potentially modifying the pressure and duration of treatment for someone with an inflammatory condition or avoiding the site of a recent cortisone injection.

A health intake form and consultation is always completed prior to commencing your treatment. This information is gathered and discussed together. It helps inform an appropriate and safe treatment plan for you. Occasionally, on initial contact, it may be deemed more advisable for you to seek treatment from another professional such as a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist or for you to ‘check in’ with your G.P or Midwife regarding your presenting symptoms.

Massage is generally a very safe and beneficial modality where the individual as a whole is considered - this includes your health, presenting symptoms and any medication you take.
