Air Pods ... do they cause ear wax build up?

Absolutely!! I have seen a number of clients over the last few months who have called me due to reduced hearing. Many of them have had fungal ear infections or significant ear wax build up. All of them were regular Air Pod users.

Regular and prolonged use of Air pods prevents ear wax from naturally making its way out of the ear canal much like hearing aids and can indeed cause fungal ear infections.

If you use Air Pods for hours on end and have reduced hearing you may have ear wax build up which will need to be removed (but not with a cotton bud).

Call us at Hear Again Berkshire and we can come to you in the comfort of your own home.

We have a 5 star rating on Google.

3 misconceptions about ear wax!

1 - Ear wax is dirty, a sign of poor hygiene!
> Incorrect! It’s perfectly natural for everyone to have ear wax, it cleans our ear canals of dust, debris and dead skin cells

2 - Cotton swabs are perfectly safe for ear cleaning!
> Incorrect! They can cause compacted wax, pushing it deeper into your ear canal

3 - Ear candling is a safe removal method!
> Incorrect! No scientific evidence supports this method. It’s poses risks to health such as burns to face or ears and can leave wax in the ear canal

If you suffer from ear wax build up we can help! We offer:

- Leading microsuction or warm water irrigation to professionally remove your ear wax
- Safe treatment in the comfort of your own home

Are you going on holiday?
Do you suffer from ear wax build up?

Should you get your ear wax removed before holiday?

Yes, you should seriously consider getting ear wax removed before your holiday, here is why:

> Air pressure changes during flights can cause severe pain and temporary hearing loss if your ears are blocked.

> Swimming or getting water trapped behind wax can trap bacteria, quickly leading to painful outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear).

For the safest and most effective results have your ear wax removed by microsuction 7 to 14 days before your holiday. This allows time to get booked in and for your ears to fully settle after the procedure.

How To Book
Don’t worry about getting in the car, finding a parking spot or allowing enough time between meetings, we come to you in the comfort of your own home. Microsuction will take around 40 minutes.

Ever wondered why you get excessive ear wax build up? It could be down to the shape of your ear canal itself!

So, what are the different shapes?

1. Narrow Canals
The Problem: Even a normal, healthy amount of wax quickly spans the entire width of the canal, creating a total blockage.
The Risk: Standard ear cleaning drops have a harder time draining out of these tight spaces, which can accidentally worsen the impaction.

2. Sharply Curved or "S-Shaped" Canals
The Problem: Wax gets physically trapped at the sharp corners or "elbows" of the bend.
The Risk: Once wax pools in the bend, it becomes shielded from natural jaw movements (like chewing or talking) that normally help pump wax outward.

3. Tortuous or Collapsed Canals
The Problem: Walls create structural "pockets" and dead ends where migrating skin cells and wax get marooned.
The Risk: It creates a highly uneven surface that makes manual removal by a specialist more complex, as the wax hides behind tissue folds.

4. Bony Overgrowths (Exostoses or Surfers Ear)
The Problem: Often called "surfer's ear," growths are triggered by cold water or wind exposure and narrow the canal into a teardrop or hourglass shape.
The Risk: The bone protrusions act like speed bumps, permanently catching wax and debris. Attempting to clear these with cotton buds is highly dangerous, as the thin skin over the bony lumps tears and bleeds very easily.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a blockage like muffled hearing or ringing then get in touch. We come to you and remove your ear wax in the comfort of your home, giving instant results.

The Relationship Between Ear Wax And Hearing Aids

If you wear hearing aids all of the time you may regularly suffer from ear wax build up.

Here’s why:
> It triggers whistling (feedback): When wax blocks the speaker or creates a seal, it can cause sound to leak back into the microphone, creating an irritating high-pitched whistle.

> It stimulates more wax: Because the hearing aid blocks the natural outward migration of wax, the ear canal is sometimes stimulated to produce even more wax.

> It causes device failure: Excess wax can permanently corrode delicate hearing aid components, clog sound ports, and cause total device silence.

How to manage the problem
-> Ensure you clean the aid daily with a soft, dry cloth daily, and use wax picks or soft brushes to gently clear the sound ports and replace wax guards.

-> Have your ears checked regularly by a qualified ear wax removal practitioner.

If you find it difficult to leave your home to get your ears checked or wax removed due to a busy life or poor mobility, just give us a call and we will come to you!
