Where do you seek support for your mental health as a deaf person?

I’m reading: Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace In a Frantic World by Mark Williams & Danny Penman

Audio CD is included…can download from www.franticworld.com/peace and I plan to see if Google Chrome can auto-caption the guided meditations…yet this accessibility should be readily available…

Where do you go for guided meditation support? With captions? With BSL?

I plan to sign up to the Oxford Centre for Mindfulness, I emailed them to ask if their online courses had subtitles in Zoom and they replied yes they do. However, I didn’t ask about sign language interpreters. That’s my next step. What have you found you can share?

I’m so impressed with and his son Joe who is partially deaf - they’re learning British Sign Language! And John Bishop plans to deliver a comedy routine in BSL! Look out for the programme about John & Joe in the autumn! I’m looking forward to it!

If you’re keen to learn BSL, you must look for a properly recognised/registered course and check the credentials of the person you are learning from. Makaton is not BSL -it is based upon BSL and is simplified for those with other learning needs. You cannot use Makaton to communicate with someone who uses BSL.

BSL has its own grammar, syntax and structure. Like with any other language - you want to learn from a native BSL user, you want to learn from the best! Do your research and find the best (qualified!) BSL tutors near you!

Beautiful setting at St Anne’s Roman Catholic School Holiday Club 🌳🌳🌳

Delivering Pilates 🤸🏽‍♀️classes to primary school age children from Reception to Year 7 🧘🏻‍♀️

*Due to Safeguarding and Data Protection there are no pictures of the activities or any of the participants *

Pilates exercises were adapted with the incorporation of visualisation of animals/other items to help visualise and make the exercise more fun:

Elephant 🐘 encouraging Rolldown with arms as the trunk
Flamingo 🦩 encouraging Single Leg Balance
Airplane ✈️ encouraging descent and ascent in Single Leg Squat with arms out

Bird-Dog 🐦 🐕 we all know and love! Kneeling on all fours and lifting the opposite arm and leg…added a Soft Pilates Ball for more fun and giggles and of course a challenge!

Bear Crawls 🐻 to improve coordination and strength

Deadbug 🐞 also to improve coordination, control and strength

And somehow Bridge led to lots of extreme style bridging backwards onto the hands from many enthusiastic kids who do gymnastics … I’ll have to think of another name for that one so as to keep the traditional Pilates Bridge in there…still, it was great fun and the kids loved it!

Finished off with some Happy Baby, Pigeon, Cat & Cow, Cobra stretches and also Deep Breathing - they were all great with hands on their abdomen lying on their backs breathing quietly and deeply - I was impressed! And opened up into a dramatic finish with Mountain Breaths as well as some fun Rolling Like A Ball!

Looking forward to another 2 sessions of Pilates at this fantastic Holiday Club at St Anne’s tomorrow and Thursday!

Hosting a stall alongside on Saturday and Sunday

Talked to lots of people who asked “What Is The Difference Between Yoga & Pilates?”

Also helped many to understand the importance of their health and well-being and that Physiotherapy can be accessed online via Zoom by booking a complimentary chat with me to discuss their pain/injury

Pilates classes are also available in SSE/BSL on Mondays and Thursdays at 6pm online via Zoom.

Finishing off a Pilates session at Deafland Rally with a yoga pose in Downward Dog

Many of the class participants didn’t feel they would be able to do it but they did! And looked fabulous too!

Hopefully back next year to do more of the same!
