If this week is making you reflect on your experience and you have suggestions of improvements that could be made we’d love to hear your thoughts - on email, via DM or in the comments.

We listen on the community groups around Reading and neighbouring areas and welcome all local families to be part of improvements.

Based on your feedback we’ve recently been working with the Early Pregnancy Unit to improve the information on the website for anyone who sadly suffers a loss before 16 weeks in the strange time between booking and being past the point of accessing the Triage Line. 🤍 World Mental Health Day & Baby Loss Awareness Week 🤍

Today, we recognise the importance of mental health and the lasting impact that baby loss can have on individuals and families.

Behind every loss is a story, a family, and a love that never fades. Grief has no timeline, and finding accessible support when you need it is so important.

Let’s continue to break the silence, raise awareness, and create a safe space for open conversations, compassion and support. What support were you offered? Were you made aware of where to access free services? Tell us what you would have wanted…

💜 Who is affected by baby loss and why do we support ?

Baby loss affects more families than many people realise.

💔 1 in 2 UK adults say they or someone they know has experienced pregnancy or baby loss.

In 2023, 2,612 babies were stillborn across the UK, and 1,766 babies died within their first 28 days in England and Wales.

Behind every statistic is a baby, a family and a story that matters.

Baby loss can affect parents, partners, siblings, grandparents, friends and entire communities. Every experience is different, and every loss deserves compassion, acknowledgement and support. This week helps conversations happen, opens doors to sensitive questions and lets people in the thick of it know they are not alone.

October is a big month for awareness, we are made aware of inequity in maternity services, of the importance of mental health and of how neurodiversity can impact experiences, to name just a few of the important causes highlighted on social media. Tomorrow starts another awareness week - one very close to our hearts at the MNVP.

We will be sharing content throughout Baby Loss Awareness week and hope to see many of you for the Wave of Light to end the week. Take care of yourselves this week and if the volume or content is too much then step away, unfollow (for now) or reach out and share your experience with us, if it helps in any way.

We’ll be recognising all kinds of loss, sharing stories bravely given to make others feel less alone and asking you ‘what, if anything could have made it any easier’. We’ll also share the local groups and national charities where you can seek support.

Some big news for families and staff - Buscot is moving! 💜

Last week RBH announced that Buscot is going to be moving to a new location within the hospital tomorrow. We have been working behind the scenes, with the teams at RBH and BIBS, to ensure that your voices are represented while planning this change.

We have listened to service user feedback - and put our own lived experience to good use - helping and the Buscot Teams to plan the new space, and consider the experience for families being cared for on Buscot.

We loved seeing this video of some of the Buscot team - they really are the heart of the unit 💜. We know that they are working really hard getting everything ready for the first babies and their families who will move into the new Buscot this week.

Get • We have a fantastic neonatal team here at the Trust, who look after our smallest and most vulnerable patients on our Buscot Ward. They do an amazing job every day, providing high-quality specialist care to babies, as well as supporting parents and families during an emotional time.💜

Next week, our neonatal team and Buscot Ward will be moving to a new location within the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The ward will move from Maternity Block level 6 to our lovely new neonatal unit on level 3, Centre Block in the RBH, and will sit alongside our paediatric unit.

We were recently invited to join the Shinfield Together event, Denise went along to represent our MNVP and join the community, and to connect with other community organisations. Our Shinfield community has seen a lot of change and has grown a lot, RG2 is lot bigger than it used to be!

Thank you to Alice Kunjappy Clifton, Voice of Inclusion Network (VINE) and the Communities Vision team for inviting us along and giving us the opportunity to share our work and connect with our communities.

Shinfield residents, volunteers and local organisations, shared a meal, danced together and learnt more about local support at the Bringing Shinfield Together event last weekend. 🎵

Everyone also got creative and helped make a joint piece of artwork celebrating what living in Shinfield means. 🎨

Shinfield has grown a lot over the years, with new homes and new communities forming, so this was great way for newer and long-standing residents to meet, make connections and feel part of the area.

The event was supported by the Voice of Inclusion Network (VINE) and the Communities Vision team.

We are always looking for neonatal parents to join our team of parent reps. Together we coproduce changes and improvements to the services at RBH - your voice is vital.

Get Repost App • BIBS 💜 To close our NICU Awareness Month stories, we’re sharing recent Buscot mum Helen’s experience with her twins, Freya and Scarlett:

“In February 2026, at 28 weeks pregnant, we were told our twin girls needed to be delivered urgently after a scan showed they had developed Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. That evening the Buscot team were on hand when Freya and Scarlett were born by c-section weighing just 2lb2oz and 2lb8oz.

We were on Buscot for 67 days as Freya and Scarlett grew stronger and the ward became like a second home for me. Each step of the way the team kept us a key part of our babies’ medical care, teaching and enabling us to be involved with tube feeding, monitoring and changing tiny nappies. They also provided support and company to me each day as I sat by my babies’ side. This meant a lot at a time when so much was out of our control.

Support from BIBS has also been key during our stay and in the months since, with the Family Support Group meetups becoming a staple in our weekly routine.

Freya and Scarlett are now 7 months old. Scarlett still has one more step in her journey ahead of her, but thanks to the skill and care of the Buscot team, they are both growing into happy and very active babies. We couldn’t be more grateful ♥️”

Helen’s words beautifully capture the importance of being supported and included as a parent during a neonatal stay. And we love hearing that our Family Support Groups have become part of their routine since being home 💜
