Could your elderly parent or relative qualify for a free NHS eye test at home? 🏑

If your parent or relative is unable to leave home unaccompanied because of a physical or mental disability, they may be eligible for an NHS-funded home eye examination.

However, qualifying for a free NHS eye test doesn't automatically mean someone qualifies for an eye test at home.

When you contact Home Eyecare, we'll ask a few questions about your relative and why they're unable to visit an optician.

This helps us check their eligibility before arranging an appointment.

You don't need to work everything out yourself. Our team can guide you through the enquiry.

Eye care that comes to you. πŸ‘πŸ‘€

For some elderly people, leaving home to attend an eye test can be difficult. They may also feel less confident travelling or worry about losing their independence.

A home eye test can make things easier by bringing essential eye care into a familiar and comfortable environment.

If you’ve noticed changes in an elderly parent, grandparent, relative or friend’s eyesight, arranging an eye test could be an important first step.

From difficulty reading to becoming less confident when moving around, there are several signs that may be worth paying attention to.

Sometimes, it’s the little changes that tell you something isn’t quite right. πŸ‘€

An elderly relative may not always tell you that their eyesight is deteriorating. They might adapt to gradual changes without even realising, or worry that asking for help could affect their independence.

You may notice that they:

🧢 Lose interest in hobbies they once enjoyed, such as knitting, reading or playing cards

πŸš— Change their driving habits, such as driving less often or avoiding driving at night

πŸ‘• Have difficulty distinguishing colours or matching clothes

πŸ‘“ Rub their eyes, complain of tired eyes or experience frequent headaches

🏑 Become less confident when moving around or carrying out everyday tasks

Some of these changes may be linked to age-related eye conditions, such as cataracts, macular degeneration or glaucoma.

One change on its own doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem with their eyesight. However, several changes together are a good reason to arrange an eye test.

5 signs your elderly relative may be struggling with their eyesight πŸ‘€

Not every change in eyesight is obvious.

Sometimes, it can show up in small changes to the way an elderly parent, grandparent or relative goes about their everyday life.

Here are 5 things you might notice:

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ They become more cautious when walking
They may walk more slowly, hold onto walls, look at the floor or become more careful on stairs.

πŸ’‘ They need more light
They may prefer rooms to be brighter or regularly ask you to turn the lights up.

🍽️ They struggle with everyday tasks
You may notice them knocking over glasses, over-pouring water or having difficulty cutting food.

🧹 They start missing things when cleaning
Dust, stains or other things around the home that they would normally notice may be missed.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ They become more withdrawn socially
They may struggle to recognise faces at family gatherings, making them feel uncomfortable or anxious.

These changes don't necessarily mean that your relative has an eye condition. However, if you notice several changes together, it may be worth arranging an eye test.

How do you know if an elderly relative needs an eye test?

Lots of elderly parents, grandparents and relatives may hide or minimise eyesight problems because they don’t want to lose their independence or burden others.

But there are changes you can look out for.

You may notice they:

πŸ‘€ Hold books or their phone closer than usual
πŸ“Ί Squint or tilt their head when watching TV
πŸš— Drive less often or avoid driving at night
πŸ’‘ Ask for more light around the home
πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Become more cautious when walking or using stairs
🍽️ Start having difficulty with everyday tasks at mealtimes
🧹 Miss things around the home when cleaning
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Withdraw from social gatherings because they struggle to recognise faces

One change on its own doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem with their eyesight, but several changes together are a good reason to arrange an eye test.
