Achilles tendinopathy is generally caused by overuse of the affected limb. It is more common among athletes training and is usually as a result of the type, frequency and severity of exercise.

Symptoms can vary from an ache or pain and swelling in the local area of the ankles, or a burning that surrounds the whole joint. The Achilles tendon does not have good blood supply or cell activity, so this injury can be slow to heal. Treatment is possible with ice, cold compression therapy, rehabilitation programme and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as well as other methods.

Conducting preventive exercises aimed at strengthening the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, typically by eccentric strengthening exercises is the ideal way to limit an injury such as this.

The King of exercises and here’s why!

The squat is a compound, full body exercise that trains primarily the Glutes, Quads and Hamstrings. It strengthens the bones, ligaments and insertion of tendons throughout the lower body.

It is essential for increasing the strength, size and developing core strength. Isometrically the spine muscular, abdominals, trunk, costal muscles, shoulders and arms are all essential to the exercise and thus are trained when squatting with the proper form.

Make sure it’s part of your routine, regardless of your training goal!!!!!!!

Anterior Knee pain (AKP) is a broad term used to describe the common complaint of pain at the front of the knee. This term is not an accurate diagnosis as AKP can be as a result of a wide variety of conditions from overuse and traumatic injury, disease, inflammation, syndromes, misalignment, fractures, dislocations and many more. Most people with AKP complain that running long distance can cause pain to the knee joint as it is high impact.

In determining the structures at fault a clinician with consider each of the knee joint articulations: femur (thigh), tibia (shin), fibula and patella (knee cap) and also the four compartments to the knee; the medial and lateral tibiofemoral compartments, the patellofemoral compartment and the superior tibiofibular joint.

Having an accurate diagnosis will lead to a higher level awareness and knowledge in the management of this pain and allows for specific and effective treatment plan to be made.
