The older I get, the less I believe healing is about becoming someone new.

It’s about coming home to yourself.

Beneath the coping strategies, the people-pleasing, the self-doubt and the survival instincts is the person you’ve always been.

Therapy isn’t about fixing what’s broken.
It’s about creating the safety to rediscover who you are.

Many of the struggles we face as adults began as ways of coping when we were younger.

People-pleasing, perfectionism, hiding our feelings, putting everyone else first, constantly seeking approval—these behaviours often started as ways to stay safe, loved, or accepted.

The problem is that what helped us survive then can leave us feeling disconnected from who we really are now.

Therapy isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about gently peeling back the layers of protection and finding your way back to your authentic self—where what you feel on the inside matches what you show on the outside.

That’s where healing begins.

June. Supposedly summer. Still wearing a jumper.

A reminder that “should” can be a heavy word.

You should be over it.
You should be stronger.
You should be coping better.

Healing doesn’t follow a calendar.

Be where you are, not where you think you ought to be!

As therapists, we can help create the conditions for growth.

We can offer a safe space, compassion, understanding, challenge, and support. We can help plant the seed, water it, and encourage it towards the light.

But healing doesn’t happen in the therapy room alone.

The environment we return to matters. If someone leaves therapy and goes back to constant criticism, unhealthy relationships, addiction, chaos, or emotional neglect, their growth may be slower—not because they’re failing, but because even healthy plants struggle in toxic soil.

Sometimes part of healing is not just changing ourselves, but changing what surrounds us.

Growth needs more than effort. It needs the right conditions.

Sometimes the hardest truth to accept is that the intensity of our feelings isn’t always about the person in front of us.

When love felt inconsistent, conditional, unavailable, or had to be earned in childhood, part of us can spend years trying to recreate that experience—hoping that this time we’ll finally be chosen.

This can show up as limerence, chasing unavailable people, staying in unhealthy relationships, or feeling devastated by rejection.

The longing is real. The pain is real.

But healing begins when we stop asking others to give us what we should never have had to earn in the first place.

You were always worthy of love, care, and acceptance.

The goal isn’t to finally win someone’s love.

It’s to stop believing your worth depends on it.

❤️ If this resonates, you’re not alone.
