One thing I’ve been reflecting on recently...

Women are carrying a lot.

Work, family, caring for others, endless to-do lists, changing hormones, and trying to keep all the plates spinning.

It’s no wonder so many of us struggle to truly relax.

I’ve been doing more 2-hour massages lately, and what I keep noticing is how often the deepest relaxation doesn’t happen until well into the treatment.

Sometimes we simply need more time.

Time to stop.

Time to breathe.

Time to soften.

Time to remember what it feels like not to be needed by anyone else for a little while.

The first part of a massage is often spent simply arriving. Letting go of the day. Letting the mind slow down. Allowing the nervous system to settle.

It’s often in that second hour that the real magic happens.

I think every woman deserves more moments like that. 💛

Why does deep pressure feel good for some people… but not for others?

Pressure is one of the most interesting parts of massage.

Many people think deeper pressure works because it “breaks up knots” or “releases scar tissue”… but most research suggests something much more fascinating is happening.

The effects of massage are largely modulated through the nervous system.

When pressure is applied to the body, it stimulates large sensory nerve fibres in the skin and muscles. According to the Gate Control Theory of Pain, these signals can compete with pain signals travelling to the brain. When those larger sensory signals are strong enough, they can essentially “close the gate,” reducing how much pain the brain perceives.

There’s also another mechanism called Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control (DNIC). This is when a strong but tolerable stimulus can trigger the body’s own pain-inhibiting systems. For some people, this is why firm or deep pressure can feel relieving rather than painful.

But here’s the important nuance.

This response only works when the pressure stays within the client’s comfort zone. If pressure becomes overwhelming, the nervous system can shift into protection instead of relief.

This is why pressure preferences vary so much from person to person. Some nervous systems respond well to firm pressure, while others respond better to gentle, soothing touch.

As massage therapists, our job isn’t to “fix” tissue with force.
Our job is to work with the nervous system—applying pressure safely, ethically, and with lots of communication.

Understanding these nuances is one of the things that makes me love what I do.

One thing I hear all the time after a massage is, “I didn’t realise how much I needed that.” 🤍

I think that’s because most of us get so used to feeling tense that it becomes our normal.

Tight shoulders.
A clenched jaw.
Feeling like you’re constantly rushing from one thing to the next.

We just keep going.

Then we stop for an hour… and realise just how much our body has been holding on to.

That’s one of the reasons I’m so passionate about massage. It isn’t just about easing tight muscles. It’s about giving yourself permission to slow down for a little while.

Sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

Where do you notice you hold your tension?

We often think of skin as something we need to fix.

Dryness. Sensitivity. Tightness. Redness.

But our skin doesn’t exist on its own. It’s constantly responding to what’s happening inside our bodies.

When we’re living in a constant state of stress, our nervous system influences so many processes throughout the body. Over time, that can affect how our skin feels and functions too.

That’s why I believe it’s important not to overwhelm the skin.

Rather than trying to fight the skin, I believe in supporting it..respecting the skin barrier, choosing products that work with the skin, and creating treatments that encourage your whole body to slow down.

Beautiful skin isn’t just about what you apply.

It’s about how well your skin is supported, how healthy its barrier is, and whether your body is being given the opportunity to rest and recover.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for our skin is simply to stop asking so much of it. 🫶

What is your nervous system… and why does it matter? 💛

You hear people talking about “calming your nervous system” all the time these days, but what does that actually mean?

Your nervous system is your body’s communication network. Every second of every day, it’s taking in information from the world around you and deciding how your body should respond.

One part of it is called the sympathetic nervous system, often known as your “fight or flight” response. It’s there to protect you if you’re in danger.

The problem is, our bodies don’t always know the difference between a real emergency and the everyday pressures of modern life.

Work.
Family.
Looking after everyone else.
Poor sleep.
Hormonal changes.
Constant notifications.
Never feeling like you truly switch off.

Over time, your body can spend longer in this alert state than it was ever designed to.

You might notice:
💛Tight shoulders or a clenched jaw.
💛 Waking at 3am and struggling to get back to sleep.
💛 Feeling exhausted but unable to relax.
💛 Headaches.
💛 Feeling overwhelmed or irritable.
💛 Digestive changes.
💛 Skin that looks dull or tired.

Then there’s the parasympathetic nervous system, often called your “rest and restore” state.

This is where your breathing naturally slows, your muscles begin to soften, your digestion works more efficiently, and your body has the opportunity to rest, repair and recover.

As women, especially while juggling work, family, hormones and the demands of everyday life, it can become harder to find enough moments where our nervous system feels safe enough to truly slow down.

This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about massage and facial massage.

For me, they’re about so much more than easing tight muscles or caring for your skin. They’re about creating the time and space for your body to slow down, breathe deeply and move towards that calmer “rest and restore” state.

Because sometimes, the kindest thing we can do for ourselves isn’t to keep pushing…

It’s to give our bodies permission to slow down. 🤍

✨ Can you recognise any of these signs in yourself? I’d love to know.

With a few new faces here recently, I thought I’d properly introduce myself and share a little about how I got here… and why I’m so passionate about what I do.

I’m the face (and the hands!) behind Zen Beauty, a cosy treatment cabin in my garden in Romsley, where I offer massage and facial treatments.

I’ve been in this industry for over 30 years. I started my career working in a salon in Halesowen before moving to London, where I worked in salons and eventually managed a busy clinic. I later returned to the Midlands, working in Halesowen again before working and managing salons in Kidderminster.
Eventually, I took my first steps into self-employment by renting a room in a local hair salon.

Then life had other plans, and I took some time out to have my three beautiful children.
When I returned to the industry, just before Covid, everything felt unrecognisable. The beauty and massage industry had moved online. It all seemed faster, louder… more. More machines, more trends, more promises.
But after 30 years, I’d learnt something important: our bodies don’t need more. They need space to slow down. They need to be listened to.

That’s what brought me to where I am now and, honestly, it’s what I’m most passionate about. Massage has always been at the heart of what I do, but over the years that passion has grown to include skin health, facial massage, and understanding the incredible role the nervous system plays in our overall wellbeing. They’re all connected, and that’s exactly how I approach my treatments.

So many of us are walking around in a constant state of stress. Shoulders up, jaw tight, minds racing, never fully switching off. And it shows up everywhere,in your sleep, your skin, your digestion, your energy levels, often in ways you might not even realise are connected.

What I love most is helping people genuinely downregulate. Not just relax for an hour before rushing back into life, but giving their body and mind the opportunity to properly reset.

This isn’t about trends or quick fixes. It’s not about machines or chasing the latest treatment. It’s skilled, intuitive, deeply holistic work that I’ve spent three decades learning, refining, and falling even more in love with.

As my children have grown older, I’ve become even more passionate about skin health, especially how we can support healthy, radiant skin without injectables or invasive treatments. There’s so much we can do naturally, and most people don’t realise what’s possible.

I keep my client list deliberately small so that everyone who walks through my cabin door receives my full attention. This isn’t a busy salon with clients coming and going all day. It’s just me, creating a calm, welcoming space where you can slow down, feel truly looked after, and leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.

If you’ve been part of my journey already, thank you for trusting me. It means more than you know.
And if you’re new here… welcome. I’m so glad you found me 💕
