Did you know one of the biggest reasons we see an increase in these types of hoof problems is the rise in temperature?
Once temperatures climb above 20°C, cows tend to spend more time standing. That extra standing time puts increased pressure on the hoof, which can lead to abscesses like this.
They’re incredibly painful, but when treated promptly, they’re also very straightforward to resolve.
The key is getting the cow seen as soon as possible. All the loose, unattached horn needs to be carefully removed so the pus can drain away. This immediately relieves the pressure on the corium, which is what causes the pain. Think of it like a blister under your fingernail—only much more painful.
Once the pressure is relieved and a block is applied to take the weight off the affected claw, recovery is usually very quick.
Early detection and prompt treatment don’t just improve welfare—they get cows back to doing what they do best, with as little downtime as possible.
