Today is Baby Loss Awareness Day. At 7pm this evening, people across the UK and around the world will light a candle for the Wave of Light, in memory of every baby who has died.

The loss of a baby, at any stage, is a grief that is often misunderstood, minimised, or carried in silence.

In my work with couples, I often see that grief after baby loss can look very different for each partner. One person may need to talk. The other may need space. One might grieve openly while the other holds everything in because they feel they need to be the strong one.

These differences are not a sign that one person cares more than the other. But they can create distance and confusion at a time when connection feels more important than ever.

If you’re carrying this grief, please know that there is no correct timeline, no right way to feel, and no expectation that you should be “over it” by now.

And if the loss has affected your relationship, couples counselling can offer a space where both of you are heard.

One of the things I hear most often is, “I didn’t know what to expect.”

So here’s what counselling isn’t: it isn’t someone telling you what to do. It isn’t being judged. It isn’t lying on a couch while someone silently takes notes. And it isn’t only for people who’ve reached breaking point.

What it is, is a confidential space where you can be honest, perhaps more honest than you’ve been able to be anywhere else. It’s a place where your thoughts, feelings and experiences are taken seriously, where patterns can be explored, and where you can begin to understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

Sometimes that means working through something specific. Sometimes it means making sense of something you’ve been carrying for years.

Counselling meets you where you are. There is no right or wrong way to begin.

If you’ve been considering counselling but aren’t sure what it involves, I offer a free fifteen minute introductory call. You can find me here: https://t.mtrbio.com/lena-fenton-counselling

Today is National Coming Out Day.

Coming out isn’t always a single, defining moment. For many people, it’s an ongoing process, one that can involve conversations with partners, family members, friends, and sometimes with yourself.

It can bring immense relief. It can also bring fear, rejection, grief, or a complicated mix of emotions that don’t fit neatly into a celebration.

What I want to say today is this: wherever you are in that process, your feelings are valid. Whether you’re out and navigating what that means for your relationships, or you’re not ready yet and carrying that privately, you deserve a space where you can explore what you’re feeling without judgement.

That’s what counselling can offer.

We often wait far too long.

We tell ourselves it’s just a phase. We’ll feel better next week. We don’t want to make a fuss. Other people have it worse.

But when emotional difficulties start affecting how you function, how you sleep, and how you relate to the people around you, that’s not something to push through. That’s something to pay attention to.

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day, and if there’s one thing I’d encourage, it’s this: give your emotional health the same respect you’d give a physical symptom that wasn’t going away.

You deserve support before things reach crisis point.

Save this post. Share it with someone who might need it. If you'd like support, you can find me here: https://t.mtrbio.com/lena-fenton-counselling

You might not say what you’re feeling, but your partner often senses it anyway.

The silence. The shorter answers. The slight withdrawal. The way you turn away instead of towards them.

We often think that keeping difficult feelings to ourselves protects the relationship, but what usually happens is the opposite. The distance grows. Assumptions fill the gaps. And both people end up feeling alone in the same room.

Emotional communication isn’t about saying everything perfectly. It’s about being willing to say, “Something is going on for me, and I’m not sure how to talk about it yet.”

That sentence alone can change the dynamic.

If you and your partner are struggling to connect, or if conversations keep ending in frustration or silence, couples counselling can give you both a space to find your way back towards each other.

If this resonates, save it for later. If you’d like to talk it through, I offer a fifteen minute introduction for £12, and you can book it here: https://t.mtrbio.com/lena-fenton-counselling

October brings World Mental Health Day, and this month I want to talk about something specific: the relationship between how we feel and how we relate to other people.

When we’re anxious, overwhelmed, grieving or emotionally exhausted, our relationships feel it too. We withdraw. We snap. We struggle to listen. We stop asking for what we need.

Throughout October, I’ll be sharing posts that explore the connection between emotional wellbeing and relationships, covering grief, intimacy, identity, boundaries, and when professional support might help.

If any of it speaks to you, I’m glad. And if you need more than a post can offer, that’s what I’m here for.

In over 30 years of experience as a counsellor, I have found that when someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts, what they desperately want is an end to the internal pain and anguish inside.
It isn't always about external circumstances—more often, it is about the heavy, overwhelming pressure carried within.
Talking it through can genuinely help ease that internal hurt and pressure. Whether you speak with a professional counsellor in a confidential setting or call a dedicated listening service, voicing what you are experiencing gives you room to breathe and process.
You don't have to carry this alone.
