💥 Could Your Desk Job Be Causing Your Headaches? 💥

Do you spend hours each day at a desk or looking at a computer screen?

Many persistent headaches aren’t actually caused by problems in the head—they’re caused by the neck. These are known as cervicogenic headaches and are one of the most common headache types we see in physiotherapy.

Common Symptoms:

✅ Headache that starts at the base of the skull and travels towards the forehead, temple, or behind the eye.
✅ Usually affects one side of the head (although it can occur on both sides).
✅ Neck pain or stiffness.
✅ Reduced neck movement.
✅ Pain that worsens after long periods sitting at a desk or using a computer.
✅ Tenderness around the upper neck and base of the skull.

Why Are Desk Workers More at Risk?

Spending long periods in the same position can place increased strain on the muscles and joints of the neck. Over time this can lead to:
• Tight muscles around the neck and shoulders.
• Reduced movement in the upper cervical joints.
• Increased tension through the base of the skull.
• Poor posture and muscle fatigue.

The result? Headaches that often become more frequent and more difficult to ignore.

Typical Pain Referral Pattern:

Pain often starts in the upper neck before referring into:
• The back of the head.
• The temple.
• Around or behind the eye.
• The forehead.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?

At The Physiotherapy Clinic, we provide a comprehensive assessment to determine whether your headaches are coming from your neck.

Treatment may include:
✔️ Hands-on manual therapy and joint mobilisation.
✔️ Soft tissue treatment to relieve muscle tension.
✔️ Acupuncture (where appropriate).
✔️ Postural assessment and workstation advice.
✔️ Individualised exercises to improve neck strength, mobility and endurance.
✔️ Practical advice to help prevent headaches from returning.

If your headaches regularly develop during or after a day at the computer, physiotherapy could help address the underlying cause—not just the symptoms.

☀️ Stay Hydrated This Warm Weather! 💧

With temperatures rising, it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day.

Water plays a vital role in keeping your body functioning properly. Staying well hydrated can help:

✅ Maintain energy levels
✅ Improve concentration and mental clarity
✅ Support healthy joints and muscles
✅ Regulate body temperature
✅ Aid digestion and nutrient absorption
✅ Reduce headaches and fatigue

Many people don’t realise they are becoming dehydrated until symptoms start to appear. Signs of dehydration can include:

⚠️ Thirst
⚠️ Dry mouth
⚠️ Dark yellow urine
⚠️ Headaches
⚠️ Dizziness or light-headedness
⚠️ Fatigue
⚠️ Muscle cramps

Severe dehydration can become serious and may require medical attention, particularly in older adults, young children, and those exercising or working outdoors.

A common myth is that tea and coffee will keep you hydrated. While they do contain water, the caffeine they contain can have a mild diuretic effect, meaning they aren’t as effective as plain water for maintaining hydration. Water remains the best choice for staying properly hydrated, especially in hot weather.

Try carrying a water bottle with you, drinking regularly throughout the day, and increasing your intake if you’re exercising or spending time outdoors.

Your body works hard for you every day—give it the water it needs! 💙💧

🦵 WHAT IS A TENDINOPATHY? 🤔

Have you been struggling with pain around a tendon that just won’t go away? You may be experiencing a tendinopathy.

🔍 What is a Tendinopathy?
A tendinopathy is a condition affecting a tendon (the tissue that connects muscle to bone). It occurs when the tendon becomes irritated, overloaded, and unable to recover properly, leading to pain and reduced function.

⚠️ Common Symptoms
• Pain during or after activity• Morning stiffness• Tenderness when pressing on the tendon• Reduced strength or performance• Pain that gradually worsens over time

📍 Common Areas Affected
• Achilles tendon (heel)• Patellar tendon (knee)• Rotator cuff tendons (shoulder)• Tennis elbow• Gluteal tendons (hip)

🏃 Common Causes
• Sudden increase in exercise or activity• Repetitive movements• Poor training load management• Muscle weakness or imbalance• Reduced recovery between activities• Age-related tendon changes

✅ How Can Physiotherapy Help?
Physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for tendinopathy. Your physiotherapist will:
✔️ Accurately diagnose the problem✔️ Identify contributing factors✔️ Develop a tailored rehabilitation programme✔️ Guide you through progressive strengthening exercises✔️ Help reduce pain and improve function✔️ Support a safe return to sport, work, or daily activities

The good news? Most tendinopathies respond very well to the right treatment and exercise programme.

🤕 Struggling with headaches or migraines?

Did you know that acupuncture is recommended by clinical guidelines and supported by research as an effective treatment option for many people suffering from recurrent headaches and migraines?

At The Physiotherapy Clinic, our skilled physiotherapists use evidence-based acupuncture as part of a comprehensive assessment and treatment approach. Acupuncture has been shown to help:

✅ Reduce the frequency of headaches and migraine attacks
✅ Decrease pain intensity and duration
✅ Reduce muscle tension in the neck, shoulders and jaw
✅ Improve sleep quality and overall wellbeing
✅ Reduce reliance on pain medication for some individuals

Research has demonstrated that acupuncture can be as effective as preventative medication for some migraine sufferers, with fewer side effects. By targeting muscle tension, trigger points and nervous system sensitivity, acupuncture can play an important role in long-term headache and migraine management.

Our experienced clinicians have a proven track record of helping patients manage headaches and migraines, combining acupuncture with expert physiotherapy assessment to identify and address contributing factors.

Don’t let headaches control your life.
