Bank holidays aren’t always the relaxing break they’re made out to be…

For some people, a Bank Holiday means lie-ins, family time, days out and making memories.
But for others, it can feel very different.

It might mean more time alone with your thoughts.
It might highlight the fact that you don’t have plans when it feels like everyone else does.
It might bring family pressures, difficult relationships or expectations you simply don’t have the energy for.
Or maybe you’re exhausted and desperately need the break, but somehow feel guilty for not making the most of it.

And sometimes, there doesn’t even have to be a reason.
You can simply wake up feeling low, anxious, disconnected or overwhelmed even when you think you should be enjoying yourself.

You don’t have to make your Bank Holiday look a certain way.
You don’t have to be productive.
You don’t have to be sociable.
You don’t have to say yes to every invitation.
You don’t have to create the “perfect” weekend.

Maybe today is about doing a little less.
Putting your phone down.
Having a slow morning.
Watching something comforting.
Going for a walk.
Saying no without feeling guilty.
Or simply getting through the day.

Whatever today looks like for you, it’s okay if it doesn’t look like everyone else’s.

And if Bank Holidays are particularly difficult for you, please know you’re not the only one who feels that way.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for ourselves is stop comparing our reality to everyone else’s highlight reel.

“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let them be.” - Carl Rogers

There is something beautifully simple, and remarkably difficult, in this idea.

We can watch a sunset without needing to improve it. We don't ask it to become brighter, softer or more convenient. We allow it to unfold as it is.

And yet with people, the pull to change, correct, advise or move them towards where we think they should be can be much harder to resist.

Perhaps part of the challenge of the person-centred approach is noticing that pull in ourselves, and asking what becomes possible when we genuinely allow another person to be.

What does “letting someone be” mean to you in your practice?

Do you ever replay conversations in your head long after they’ve happened?

“Did I sound rude?”
“Why did they say it like that?”
“Have I upset them?”
“Maybe I shouldn’t have said that.”
“Why didn’t I just keep my mouth shut?”

And then suddenly, a 2-minute conversation has taken up the entire evening.

You analyse their tone.
You rethink your response.
You look for the moment you might have got something wrong.

Sometimes you even convince yourself someone is annoyed with you without them ever actually saying they are.

The hardest part is that your brain is trying to protect you by finding an answer but instead, you end up stuck in a loop of what ifs.

Not every change in someone’s tone means you’ve done something wrong.
Not every silence means someone is upset with you.
And not every uncomfortable feeling needs to be solved immediately.

Sometimes the conversation is over.

Your mind just hasn’t realised it yet.

When your mind won’t switch off… try this.

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to solve our thoughts that we end up making them louder.

If you’re lying in bed replaying a conversation, worrying about tomorrow or thinking about everything you need to do, try this simple exercise:

1. Ask yourself: “Is this something I can do anything about right now?”

If the answer is yes write down the one small thing you can do.

If the answer is no remind yourself:
“I don’t have to solve this tonight.”

2. Separate the facts from the thoughts.

For example:

Fact: They haven’t replied to my message.
Thought: They’re annoyed with me.

Those two things aren’t necessarily the same.

3. Ask: “What would I say to a friend who was thinking this?”

We’re often much kinder and more rational with other people than we are with ourselves.

4. Give your brain permission to pause.

Not every thought needs an answer.

Sometimes you can simply notice it and say:

“That’s a thought, not necessarily a fact. I can come back to this if I need to.”

You might not be able to stop your mind from producing thoughts but you can start changing how you respond to them.

And sometimes, that small change can make a surprisingly big difference. ❤️

Save this for the next time your thoughts are keeping you awake.

Something we want to say not just as counsellors, but as people.

We think sometimes we forget that behind every counselling room is just another human being.

Yes, we’re counsellors. We sit with people through some incredibly difficult moments. We listen to things that can be hard to say out loud. We support people when life feels messy, overwhelming, confusing or just too much.

But we’re also just two people. We’ve had days where we’ve smiled when we didn’t really feel like smiling. Days where we’ve said “I’m fine” because explaining how we actually felt seemed far too exhausting.

Days where we’ve overthought something someone said for hours. Days where we’ve worried about things that hadn’t even happened.
Days where we’ve put everyone else first and realised afterwards that we hadn’t really checked in with ourselves at all. And maybe that’s one of the reasons we care so much about creating a space where people don’t have to pretend.

Because sometimes you don’t need advice. You don’t need someone telling you to “look on the bright side.”
You don’t need to hear “everything happens for a reason.”

Sometimes you just need someone to sit beside you and say “I get it. That sounds really bloody hard.”

You need somewhere you can cry without feeling embarrassed.
You can be angry without being judged.
You can say the things you’re too scared to say anywhere else.
You can admit that you’re struggling, even if you can’t quite explain why.
And you can sit in silence if that’s all you’ve got that day.

Over time, we’ve learnt something really important…

You genuinely don’t know what someone is carrying behind the person you see.

The person who seems happy might be falling apart inside.
The person who is always there for everyone else might desperately need someone to be there for them.
The person who says “I’m just tired” might actually be completely emotionally exhausted.
And the person who keeps saying “I’ll be okay” might secretly be wondering when they’re ever going to feel okay again.

So, if that’s you right now…

Please stop telling yourself that you’re weak.
Please stop comparing your struggles to someone else’s.
Please stop thinking you have to reach absolute breaking point before you’re “bad enough” to ask for help.

You’re allowed to not be okay. You’re allowed to need someone. You’re allowed to put yourself first sometimes. And you don’t have to apologise for any of it.

Because underneath the counselling room, the qualifications, the professional boundaries and everything else…

we’re just two people too.

And we think sometimes that’s exactly what we all need. Another person who will sit with us while life feels a little too much.

If this hit home, you don’t have to explain why.
Just know you’re not the only one.

And that’s one of the reasons why we became counsellors in the first place because we know how much it can mean to simply have someone who listens, really listens, when life feels too heavy to carry alone.

What if therapy didn’t have to happen between four walls?

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t knowing what to say… it’s finding the words at all.

That’s where Walk & Talk Therapy can feel different.

Walking side by side, surrounded by nature, can take away some of the pressure of sitting face to face. Many people find conversations flow more naturally, their minds feel clearer and opening up feels just that little bit easier.

You don’t have to maintain eye contact.
You don’t have to sit still.
You don’t even have to fill every silence.

Sometimes, a quiet walk and fresh air can be just as healing as the conversation itself.

Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, stress, low mood, grief or simply feeling overwhelmed, Walk & Talk Therapy offers a gentle, relaxed space to explore whatever you’re carrying.

Where do you go when you need to clear your head?
Is it the woods, the beach, the countryside or your local park? Share your favourite place in the comments.

You never know… your suggestion might inspire someone else to take that first step today.

Some days you feel like you’ve got everything under control…

Other days, replying to a text feels overwhelming, the washing piles up, your mind won’t switch off and you wonder why everyone else seems to be coping better than you.

The truth is… they’re probably wondering the same thing.

We spend so much energy pretending we’re okay because we don’t want to burden anyone or appear weak. But struggling doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human.

You don’t have to wait until you’re at breaking point before asking for support. Your feelings don’t have to be “bad enough” to matter.

So today, let’s remind each other that it’s okay to be honest.

What’s one small thing that’s helped you through a difficult day?

It could be a walk, a cup of tea, music, your pet, talking to someone or simply getting out of bed.

Your answer might be exactly what someone else needs to read today.

Life isn’t always as together as it looks…

You know those days where you answer “I’m fine” because explaining how you’re really feeling just seems too exhausting?

The days where you’re smiling on the outside but carrying a thousand thoughts on the inside.

Where you’re comparing yourself to everyone else, feeling like they’re coping better than you… when the truth is, so many people are quietly fighting battles you’ll never see.

You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You don’t have to be productive every day.
And you don’t have to carry everything on your own.

Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is admit we’re struggling.

What’s one thing you wish people understood about how you’re really feeling?

Or, if today feels heavy and you don’t want to talk, simply leave a 💛 in the comments to remind someone else they’re not alone.

You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from counselling.

So many people wait until they’re completely overwhelmed before reaching out for support. But counselling isn’t just for surviving difficult times, it’s also about understanding yourself, building resilience and creating the life you want.

Maybe you’re:
✨ Feeling anxious or emotionally drained.
✨ Struggling with relationships.
✨ Carrying the weight of past experiences.
✨ Feeling “stuck” but unsure why.
✨ Simply wanting a safe, non-judgemental space to talk.

Whatever you’re facing, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Taking the first step can feel daunting, but it can also be the beginning of meaningful change. Every journey starts with one conversation.

Be kind to yourself. Your thoughts, feelings and experiences matter.

If this resonates with you, or you know someone who might need to hear it, feel free to share.

Today would have been Andy’s birthday ❤️

By chance our 10th anniversary group night falls on the very same day.

Ten years ago nine men walked through the doors of our very first ANDYSMANCLUB.

Tonight thousands of men will walk through hundreds of doors across the UK.

Every group has had pizzas delivered to mark the occasion but the real milestone isn’t the food…

It’s the conversations that will happen tonight.

The men who’ll walk through the door.

The facilitators who’ll be there to welcome them.

Happy Birthday Andy.

Ten years on your legacy lives on in every conversation 👌🏽
