Small movements. Big benefits. Your strength session might already be happening…

When we talk about strength training, it’s easy to picture dumbbells, kettlebells and gyms.

But strength is also something we use every day.

Carrying the shopping from the car, lifting a watering can, getting up from a low chair, climbing the stairs or moving a plant pot all ask our muscles to work against resistance.

And maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important as we get older. Strong muscles help us stay mobile, protect our joints, maintain our balance and continue doing the things we enjoy independently.

There are plenty of opportunities to build a little more strength into everyday life:

🛍️ Carry your shopping bags – comfortably loaded bags can provide a surprisingly useful resistance exercise.
🪑 Sit-to-stands from a chair – a wonderfully functional exercise for thighs and hips.
🌱 Gardening – lifting pots, carrying compost, digging and pushing a wheelbarrow all involve strength.
🪜 Use the stairs – particularly good for strengthening the legs.
🥫 Use household objects as weights – tins, bottles or a filled water bottle can all provide resistance.
🌷 Carry a watering can – fill it only as much as is comfortable and swap hands as you go.

The important thing is choosing the right exercise and the right amount of resistance for you.

At Jill Drew Physiotherapy, we can assess your current strength, balance and mobility and prepare an individual home exercise programme to help you maintain – or improve – your strength at any age.

It doesn’t need to be complicated, and you don’t necessarily need lots of time or equipment. A good programme should be realistic, achievable and designed around your everyday life and the things you want to keep doing.

Because ultimately, we’re not strengthening muscles simply to become better at exercises.

We’re strengthening them so we can keep carrying the shopping, maintaining the garden, getting up from the floor, travelling, walking and living independently for as long as possible. 💙

Remembering the wonderful Dolly Parton ❤️

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” – Dolly Parton

There are some people whose talent is matched only by their kindness, generosity and authenticity. Dolly was one of those rare people. She inspired millions not just through her music, but through the way she lived her life – with warmth, humour, resilience and purpose.

Like so many people, her songs have been the soundtrack to countless everyday moments. I’ll admit that “Jolene” and “Islands in the Stream” are firmly on my go-to ironing playlist! Somehow the ironing feels a little quicker when Dolly is singing in the background.

Her words remind us that the greatest success isn’t about being like everyone else – it’s about discovering who you are, embracing it, and living with purpose.

Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the smiles, the wisdom and the joy you’ve brought to so many lives.

Rest in peace. Your songs – and your spirit – will live on. 💛🎶

Do you have a favourite Dolly Parton song ? I’d love to hear it.

Train for the life you want to live

Most of us plan holidays, weekends away, adventures with friends, family days out, or simply keeping up with the children or grandchildren.

But how many of us actually prepare our bodies for them?

Whether you’re 25 or 75, life is easier and far more enjoyable when your body is strong enough to do the things you love. Walking around a new city, climbing the steps to a castle, carrying your luggage, spending a day at a theme park, hiking in the countryside, or even dancing at a wedding all place demands on your body.

The good news? You don’t need to train for a marathon.

Small daily habits make a huge difference:
🚶 Walk for 10–20 minutes after dinner.
🪜 Choose the stairs when you can.
💪 Include a couple of strength sessions each week.
⚖️ Practise your balance while brushing your teeth.
🚲 Walk or cycle for short journeys instead of driving.

These simple choices gradually build the strength, stamina and confidence that help you enjoy life without being held back by aches, pains or fatigue.

In the Clinic, Lisa and I help people of all ages move better, feel stronger and stay active—whether your goal is returning to sport, enjoying family adventures, travelling the world, or simply living everyday life with confidence.

Because you’re not just exercising for today…

You’re training for the life you want to live.

Small movements. Big benefits. This time… while you brush your teeth .

We often think improving our balance means setting aside time for a specific exercise session. But one of the easiest ways to move more is to attach a simple exercise to something you already do every day.

And hopefully we’re all brushing our teeth twice a day! 😊

Try standing on one leg while you brush your teeth.

Balance is a skill, and like strength, it benefits from regular practice. Standing on one leg challenges your muscles, joints and nervous system to work together to keep you steady.

And those little opportunities to practise really can add up.

You could start with just 10–20 seconds on each leg, keeping a hand near the basin or worktop if you need some support, and gradually build up as you become steadier.

The important thing is that exercise doesn’t always have to involve a trip to the gym, special clothes, equipment or finding an extra hour in your day.

☕ Calf raises while the kettle boils.
🪥 Balance while you brush.
📞 Walk while you chat.
🛍️ Use carrying and putting away the shopping as an opportunity to move and strengthen.

Movement can simply become part of the life you’re already living.

And it’s these everyday habits that can help us maintain our strength, balance, confidence and independence as we get older.

What everyday activity could you turn into a little movement opportunity?

☕ Your kettle could be your personal trainer…

It might sound amusing, but there’s actually some excellent science behind it.

Many people think exercise only “counts” if it involves a gym, a fitness class or a long walk. The truth is, our bodies benefit from movement throughout the day.

Research has shown that the amount we move during everyday life – standing up, walking around the house, carrying shopping, climbing stairs and even fidgeting – can make a remarkable difference to our long-term health.

In one large study, adults who didn’t take part in formal exercise but accumulated just a few short bursts of vigorous movement during normal daily activities had a significantly lower risk of premature death. It wasn’t about spending hours exercising – it was about making movement a natural part of everyday life.

At Jill Drew Physiotherapy, we often encourage patients to “habit stack” simple exercises onto things they’re already doing:

☕ Calf raises while the kettle boils.
🦷 Stand on one leg while brushing your teeth.
🍽️ Squats while waiting for the microwave.
🛒 Carry the shopping rather than dragging it.
🚶 Walk around while you’re on the phone.

These tiny moments soon add up.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing arthritis, improving your balance or simply wanting to stay strong and independent as you get older, regular movement throughout the day really does matter.

You don’t always need an hour to exercise.

Sometimes five minutes here and there is exactly where better health begins.

💙 What’s one little movement habit you could add to your day? We’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

Supporting you to keep moving every day.

Sometimes the best therapy isn’t found in a clinic… it’s found beneath the trees.

This week I joined my wonderful WALXleamingtonandwarwick group for a very different kind of evening at Newbold Comyn.

Rather than focusing on distance , fitness or pace, we slowed right down. We sat quietly beneath the pine and deciduous trees, lay on the woodland floor looking up through the canopy, listened to the birds, noticed the scents of the forest and even spent time with our eyes closed, simply feeling the texture of a tree with our hands.

As a physiotherapist, I’m passionate about helping people move well, but this reminded me that movement is about so much more than muscles and joints. Sometimes the greatest health benefits come from simply slowing down and reconnecting with nature.

Research into Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) has shown that time spent in woodland can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve mood and help us feel calmer and more connected. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that we all left feeling lighter than when we arrived.

Thank you to Emma and Peter at WALX for such a special evening and to Marie for the wonderful photos- I was too caught up in the moment to take photos myself .

If you’ve never tried simply sitting beneath a tree and looking up through the branches, I can highly recommend it!

You Check Your Teeth and Eyes…
Have You Checked Your Feet?

Most of us wouldn’t miss our regular dental or optician check-up, yet our feet are often overlooked until problems arise.

At Sole At Heart, we believe prevention is key. Our Foot Health Check-Up is designed to help identify potential issues early, support mobility, and keep your feet healthy, comfortable, and pain-free.

A key part of the check-up is our Doppler vascular assessment. This simple, painless test allows us to listen to and assess the blood flow in your feet and lower legs. Good circulation is vital for healthy feet, and changes in blood flow can sometimes be an early indicator of vascular problems that may not yet be causing symptoms.

The Doppler assessment can help identify:
✔ Reduced circulation to the feet and legs
✔ Early signs of peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
✔ Vascular changes that may affect healing and foot health
✔ Concerns that may benefit from further investigation by your GP or specialist

Many people are surprised by what a routine foot health check can reveal. Detecting issues early can help prevent more serious complications in the future and gives you valuable insight into your overall health and wellbeing.

Good health starts from the feet.

We’re currently offering our comprehensive Foot Health Check-Up for just £28, making now the perfect time to invest in your health.

Whether you’re on your feet all day, enjoy an active lifestyle, or simply want peace of mind, a Foot Health Check-Up is one of the best preventative health measures you can take.

Let’s get on top of foot health and keep you moving comfortably and confidently.

How Good Is Your Balance?

Here’s a simple test you can try right now: stand on one leg. How long can you hold it steady?

It might seem like a small challenge, but your balance tells us a lot about how well your body is functioning.

At Jill Drew Physiotherapy Clinic, we see balance as an important indicator of health at every stage of life. For children, balance helps develop coordination and confidence in movement. For adults, it supports fitness, performance, posture, and injury prevention. For older adults, it plays a key role in maintaining independence and reducing the risk of falls.

Balance is much more than staying upright. It relies on your muscles, joints, vision, inner ear, nervous system, and brain all working together. When one of these systems isn’t functioning optimally, balance is often one of the first things to be affected.

Research has shown that balance is closely linked to overall health and wellbeing. In older adults, the ability to stand on one leg has even been associated with longevity and future health outcomes. But regardless of age, poor balance can increase the risk of injury, reduce confidence in movement, and affect everyday activities.

The good news? Balance can be improved.

Like strength and flexibility, balance is a skill that responds to practice. Simple activities such as standing on one leg while brushing your teeth, walking heel-to-toe, practising yoga or Tai Chi, or following a personalised exercise program can make a real difference.

At Jill Drew Physiotherapy Clinic, we assess balance as part of understanding how your body moves and functions. Whether you’re a young athlete, a busy parent, recovering from injury, or wanting to stay active and independent as you age, improving your balance can help you move with greater confidence.

Try the Balance Test Today

Stand on one leg and see how long you can hold it.

Then ask yourself:
Could you spend a few minutes each day improving this important skill?

Your balance today can influence how confidently, safely, and actively you move tomorrow.

Strong Balance. Better Movement. Every Age.
