TECHNIQUE OF THE WEEK 💪 | Spanish Reverse Lunge

A quad-focused twist on the traditional reverse lunge — combining unilateral strength, control and stability.

The resistance band provides a forward pull at the knee, increasing quad demand while allowing you to load the knee through a controlled range.

🎯 Main focus
🔥 Quads
🍑 Glutes & hamstrings
⚖️ Single-leg balance & control
🔗 Ankle–knee–hip stability

HOW TO PERFORM 👇

1️⃣ Anchor a resistance band securely at approximately knee height.

2️⃣ Step your working leg into the band, positioning it behind the knee, and walk forward to create tension.

3️⃣ Stand tall with your feet around hip-width apart and keep the heel of your working leg “glued” to the floor.

4️⃣ Keeping your torso relatively upright, take a controlled step backwards and down with the non-banded leg as the working knee bends.

5️⃣ Pause at the bottom to establish your depth, balance and control.

6️⃣ Drive through the heel of the banded leg to return to standing.

7️⃣ Actively control the pull of the band throughout — don’t let it dictate the movement.

PROGRAMMING 📋
3–4 sets × 8–10 reps each leg

REGRESSION ⬇️
Use a lighter resistance band and slow the movement down while you build confidence with the balance and movement pattern.

PROGRESSION ⬆️
Increase the resistance of the band and/or hold a light weight at chest

💥 Technique of the Week: Landmine Row 💥

Looking to build a stronger upper back? The Landmine Row is a fantastic exercise to improve strength, posture and shoulder stability.

By following the natural arc of the landmine, this movement works through the muscles of your upper back, including your mid traps, rhomboids, lats and rear delts, helping to build strength where it really matters.

✅ Improves upper back strength
✅ Supports better posture
✅ Enhances shoulder stability
✅ Great for gym performance and everyday activities

💡 Top technique tips:
• Hinge from your hips and keep your spine neutral throughout.
• Brace yourself with your non-working arm on your front thigh.
• Lead the movement with your elbow, driving it up and slightly back.
• Pause for 2 seconds at the top to maximise muscle activation.
• Lower the weight slowly and with control.

🎯 Aim for: 3–4 sets of 8–10 reps on each side.

As always, focus on quality over weight. Master the movement first, then gradually increase the load as your strength improves.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on! 💪

Tell us it’s the summer holidays without telling us it’s the summer holiday’s. Shout out to all the working parents doing the summer juggle. You may notice a very youthful new receptionist in the clinic over the next few weeks 😂

💡 Technique of the Week: ½ Kneeling Lateral Rope Chops

Looking to build a stronger core that actually transfers into everyday life and sport? This week’s Technique of the Week is the ½ Kneeling Lateral Rope Chop.

This is much more than an ab exercise. By performing the movement in a half-kneeling position, your legs can’t compensate, meaning your core has to do the work. It develops rotational strength, anti-rotation control and stability through the trunk – all essential for running, lifting, racket sports, golf and reducing injury risk.

✅ Strengthens your obliques and deep abdominal muscles
✅ Improves rotational power and control
✅ Challenges core stability and balance
✅ Activates the glutes and upper back for a truly functional movement

Top coaching tips:
✔️ Keep your arms straight throughout the movement.
✔️ Brace your core before you rotate.
✔️ Rotate from your torso, not just your arms.
✔️ Pause for 2 seconds at the end of the movement before returning with control.
✔️ Focus on quality rather than speed.

Prescription:
🔹 3–4 sets of 8–10 reps per side

Progress it: Move further away from the anchor point or increase the band resistance.

Regress it: Stand instead of kneeling or use a lighter resistance band closer to the anchor

A huge well done to Phil, who recently completed an incredible 6 laps (30 miles) at the Solo Endure 24 event! 👏🏃‍♂️

What’s even more impressive is that this came not long after dealing with a knee injury. Over the past few months, Phil has been working hard with us through a combination of physiotherapy, rehab and sports massage to get himself back to the point where he could not only run again, but take on an event like this.

As physios, one of the hardest things we see is runners feeling like an injury has put an end to the event they’ve spent months training for. Whilst that’s sometimes unavoidable, more often than not there are things we can do to help keep you moving, manage the injury and get you back to your training safely.

We’re really proud to have been part of Phil’s journey and to see all of his hard work pay off. Congratulations, Phil – what an achievement! 👏

If you’ve got a ni**le that’s stopping you enjoying your running or making you worry about an upcoming event, don’t leave it until it’s too late. Come and have a chat with one of our physios and let’s see how we can help.

🔥 Technique of the Week: Pallof Press & March 🔥

Looking to improve your core strength, balance and running mechanics? Give the Pallof Press & March a try!

This exercise is about much more than just your abs. It challenges your body’s ability to resist rotation while improving single-leg stability, hip flexor strength and overall control – all of which transfer brilliantly into running and many everyday activities.

✅ Builds deep core strength and spinal stability
✅ Improves balance and coordination
✅ Strengthens the hip flexors
✅ Develops single-leg control for better athletic performance
✅ Great for runners and anyone wanting to move more efficiently

💡 Top tip: Focus on keeping your torso completely still as you lift your knee. If your body twists towards the band, reduce the resistance and prioritise quality over quantity.

Aim for 2–3 sets of 8–10 reps per leg, moving slowly and with control throughout.

As always, if you’re unsure whether this exercise is suitable for you or you’re struggling with back, hip or running-related pain, our physiotherapy team is here to help.
