Addiction affects the whole family. Freedom gives families a chance to heal. 💚
Father’s Day can bring up a lot of emotions.
Looking back, I know there were times when my addiction put my son at risk. Would I ever have chosen that? Absolutely not. The last thing I would ever have wanted was for my son to be affected by my drinking.
There were times Martin couldn’t cope and had to move out. The second time was when I was sectioned, and Josh had to go and stay with my sister. Looking back now, I can see just how much addiction affects not only the person struggling, but everyone who loves them.
I was lucky. Even when things were at their worst, Martin was there protecting Josh when I couldn’t. He made sure Josh was safe, supported and loved, and for that I will always be grateful.
Today, I want to wish a Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Whether you’ve stood by a loved one through addiction, or whether you’re struggling yourself and not being the dad you want to be right now, please don’t give up. Freedom is possible, and families can heal.
Happy Father’s Day. 💚
