We all grieve in our own way. Some do so privately and silently. Others need to share their grief with others. Some will hunger for empathy. Others will want to walk alone. Some will want to hang on to the pain of their grief for as long as it takes. Other will want to leave it behind and move on. Some will need the comfort and familiarity of traditional ways of mourning. Others will want to invent their own more personal rituals.

We all have a unique relationship with our loved one so when they die our grief is equally unique.

I grew a life around my grief
despite its daunting size
I moved my things to fit it in
and listened when it sighed

I threw my windows open
to bring it nurturing sun
even grief needs daylight
and often craves a little fun

I washed my grief with care
I spoke to it of you
I brought it out to roam the park
the way you’d often do

this grief is quite the lodger
we’ve fallen into step
we mooch around like soulmates
in work, in play, in rest

and when the days feel light
grief lingers by the door
afraid he can’t accompany me
afraid he’ll be a bore

but in my heart I make a space
and bring him for the ride
together we walk side by side
I see no need to hide

I grew a life around my grief
I made a home for two
for now this grief’s a part of me
the me who’s missing you.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of the late Alan Ball. Alan will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

"True greatness is not found in titles or trophies, but in the quiet strength of a man who makes the world better through his actions."

Alan's Funeral Service will take place on Monday 16th March 2026, 1pm at St Helens Crematorium. Family flowers only, donations, if desired to Willowbrook Hospice.
