Equine roundworms pose a significant threat to the health of our horses, particularly the younger ones. 🪱

Roundworms can be identified through faecal egg count testing, along with redworms. 🔬🪱🥼💩🐴🌱

Roundworms are large, often reaching lengths of up to 40cm. Their appearance is typically a large white colour, making them noticeable when found. 🪱

One of the most concerning aspects of roundworm eggs is their resilience. They can remain viable in pastures for many years, thanks to a tough outer shell that protects them from environmental elements.🌞❄️

Young horses under the age of four are particularly susceptible to roundworm infections due to their underdeveloped immune systems. Fortunately, as they mature, they often develop immunity.🩺

Infections can lead to severe consequences, including intestinal obstruction, which can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly. ⚠️

Clinical signs of roundworm infestations may include weight loss or the appearance of a pot belly, lethargy or decreased energy levels, coughing, and a dull or lacklustre coat. ⚠️

Monitoring your horse's health and conducting regular faecal tests can help pinpoint the horses with a parasite burden and receive treatment for that specific parasite.

You might think there are multiple wormer options for your horse, with the different brands and brightly coloured boxes, there must be at least 20-25 options in the UK alone.

But in reality, there are only five chemicals that target equine parasites. Each chemical targets a different range of parasites.

For example, only two of them target the encysted stage of redworm, while a different two target tapeworm.

Just because the packaging or brand is different, it does not mean that the chemical is.

With only five chemicals available and no new ones currently in production, it is crucial to safeguard their efficacy.

By adopting a test-based parasite control strategy, we can reduce overuse, prevent resistance, and ensure the continued effectiveness of our equine wormers.

At Jess Equine, we offer and supply wormers based on your horse's test results.

As a qualified, registered animal medicines advisor, I can help advise you on the correct chemical for your horse, depending on their individual needs.

Faecal egg counts (FECs) are recommended every 8-12 weeks. However, for horses at a higher risk, such as the young, old, those with a history of high counts, other health conditions, or poor yard and field management, it is advisable to carry out tests more frequently, approximately every 5-6 weeks.🪱🔬

By performing faecal egg counts, we can identify the egg laying stages of strongyles (redworm) and ascarids (roundworm).

Think of wormers as antibiotics – the more frequently they are used, the higher the likelihood of developing resistance over time. To prevent worm resistance, it is crucial to establish a test based parasite control plan that includes regular worm count testing.🌱🔬🥼

Remember, it's essential to "test before you treat." By conducting worm count testing, you can accurately assess whether your horse truly requires treatment, avoiding unnecessary medication. This approach not only prevents worm resistance but also preserves the effectiveness of wormers. 🐴

Tapeworms are flat, white parasites that can grow up to 20 cm or more in length. They thrive at the ileocaecal junction, the area where the small and large intestines meet, attaching themselves to the gut wall of horses. 🪱

These parasites feed on the food that horses ingest, which can lead to serious health issues. Infestation can cause damage to the gut tissue, resulting in symptoms such as diarrhoea, weight loss, and colic. ⚠️

It's important to note that tapeworms are excreted in packets in dung, meaning that standard faecal egg count testing does not provide definitive results. 🔬❌

Tapeworms are detected via an EquiSal saliva test. It is advised to test for tapeworms every six months, reflecting their life cycle. In the UK, saliva testing has revealed that approximately 25% of horses are infected with tapeworms. 💧

It is crucial to test for tapeworms instead of relying on traditional blanket worming. Only two chemicals can effectively target tapeworms, and we must use them wisely to prevent worm resistance. 🥼

EquiSal testing is available on the Jess Equine webpage, along with seasonal faecal egg counts. These two tests are the cornerstone of the Jess Equine's test based parasite control. 🐎💚

Testing before turning out on to summer grazing identifies horses with high worm burdens that will release eggs on to grass pastures. 🌱🪱☀️

By implementing worm count testing, you can avoid unnecessary treatments, protect your horse's health and well-being, and help maintain the effectiveness of wormers for the future. 🔬

FAECAL EGG COUNT - Faecal egg counting is used to help identify the egg laying stages of redworm and Roundworm. 🐴
It is advised to FEC routinely every 8-12 weeks.🔬
Your horse is due if it was last tested in March.

Young, old and high shedding horses require more frequent testing.🥼

EQUISAL TAPEWORM SALIVA TEST- The EquiSal Tapeworm test measures the relevant antibodies in the horse’s saliva. It is advised to test for tapeworm every 6 months. 💧
If your horse has a borderline or Moderate/High result, treatment is required. The warm wet weather creates favourable conditions for tapeworm parasites to thrive, making it an ideal time of year to test. 🪱
