Hot weather can affect your health in lots of ways. 🔆

Current Yellow Heat Health alerts mean temperatures could affect vulnerable people, including older adults, babies and young children.

If someone feels faint during hot weather it could be due to a combination of low blood pressure and dehydration. Help those who need support keep cool and stay hydrated. 💦

The HPV vaccine helps prevent HPV related cancers in both boys and girls – these cancers include cervical, a**l, ge***al, head and neck cancers.

Since the vaccine was introduced in England, there has been a drop in the number of cases of HPV and it is expected to save hundreds of lives every year.

It’s important to sign your child’s HPV vaccine consent form when you receive it.

This is Ben from Denton.
He went to see his GP about a persistent cough that wouldn’t go away.
Ben’s doctor referred him for tests at Tameside Hospital which revealed cancer of the voicebox, also known as laryngeal cancer. He was transferred to Manchester Royal Infirmary who were luckily able to treat him.
Ben underwent a total laryngectomy — a major surgery that removed his voice box, followed by 25 rounds of radiotherapy and two 16-hour chemotherapy sessions.
He’s now doing well. He’s back at work and also volunteers as a patient representative for Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance.
We’re sharing Ben’s story to mark which takes place on Monday 27 July.
The main symptom of laryngeal cancer is having a hoarse voice for more than 3 weeks.
Other symptoms can include:
∙ A change in your voice,
∙ Pain when swallowing or difficulty swallowing
∙ Lump or swelling in your neck
∙ Long-lasting cough or breathlessness
∙ Persistent sore throat or earache
∙ High-pitched wheezing noise when you breathe
∙ In severe cases, difficulty breathing
∙ Some people may also experience bad breath, unintentional weight loss, or extreme tiredness.
If you have symptoms for more than 3 weeks that you are worried about, your GP wants to hear from you so please do make an appointment.
The chances are it won’t be cancer, but if it is then finding it early can make all the difference and help you to begin treatment sooner when it is more likely to be successful.

Take extra care to protect babies and children from the sun. Their skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, and damage caused by repeated exposure to sunlight could lead to skin cancer developing in later life.
Children under 6 months should be kept out of direct strong sunlight.

From March to October in the UK, children should:

Cover up with suitable clothing
Spend time in the shade, particularly from 11am to 3pm
Wear at least SPF30 sunscreen - and make sure it’s applied to areas not protected by clothing, such as face, ears, feet and the backs of hands.
