Back to school can highlight challenges that have always been there
New routines, new teachers, new expectations, the start of term asks a lot of every child.
For some, that shift makes existing struggles with focus, organisation, or emotional regulation much harder to ignore.
If these patterns aren't new, they may be worth exploring rather than assuming they'll settle as the term progresses.
An ADHD assessment can help build a clearer picture of what’s happening, so you can make informed decisions about the next steps together.

Big emotions can feel very big indeed for a child with ADHD.A small disappointment, like being told screen time is over, can escalate into tears or shouting remarkably quickly.

This isn't a discipline problem. Children with ADHD often experience emotions more intensely and may find it harder to pause before reacting. The regulation skills that come more naturally to other children usually need to be taught and practised more explicitly here, with a lot of patience along the way.

Understanding this difference can change how these moments are handled, for both you and your child.

Take the first step towards understanding your child's experience.

There's a particular kind of frustration in knowing exactly what needs to be done and still not being able to start it. The washing up sits there. The email stays unanswered. The form remains half filled in on the kitchen table. From the outside, it can look like a lack of effort or care.

This is often executive dysfunction, a common experience for people with ADHD. It affects the brain's ability to plan, initiate and follow through on tasks, regardless of how much someone wants to get them done. Willpower alone rarely solves it, because it isn't a willpower problem in the first place.

Recognising this pattern is often the first step towards finding strategies that actually work with your brain, rather than against it.

Take the first step towards understanding your experience.

Many people spend years blaming themselves.

They describe themselves as lazy, disorganised, forgetful or not trying hard enough.

For some people, an ADHD assessment doesn't just provide answers. It changes the way they understand themselves.

Whether ADHD is the explanation or not, understanding the reasons behind your experiences can be the first step towards moving forward.

No two people experience ADHD in exactly the same way.

For one person, it may be difficulty staying organised. For another, it could be impulsivity, emotional regulation or constantly feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks.

That's why a comprehensive assessment is so important. It helps us understand the individual, not just the symptoms.

Executive functioning is often described as the brain's management system.

It helps us plan, organise, prioritise, remember information and regulate behaviour.

For people with ADHD, executive functioning can be particularly challenging.

Understanding why these difficulties occur can help reduce self-blame and improve coping strategies.

An often searched question is “Can adults still be diagnosed with ADHD?”

The short answer is, “absolutely.”

Many adults receive a diagnosis after years of wondering why certain aspects of everyday life have felt more challenging.

A diagnosis can help explain lifelong experiences and open the door to effective support.
