Let’s talk about death to challenge some of the fears and create connection.

Some wonderful work has also been done by hospice nurse Julie McFadden (no affiliation) on social media and within her book “Nothing to Fear”

Agreed

I would also love to see the mental health industry appropriately regulated to ensure the fair and adequate provision of services under the titles of counselling and mental health professionals. Ensuring that all clients are protected and so it is no longer their unknown responsibility to ensure their mental health provider is qualified - ironically, the current need to have to do so is utter madness.

I would love to see government subsidising mental health professionals so that counsellors could afford to charge less and everyone has fair access to mental health therapies when it is needed - another irony in the cost of living crisis is that mental health is under pressure but no-one can afford the help

We need to change the accessibility and regulation of the UK’s mental health

“Mental health is in many ways the issue of our times.” – Andy Burnham, 2022

We couldn’t agree with him more.

We welcome the new Prime Minister and urge him to make mental health a priority.

This is what his Labour government must do to tackle “the issue of our times”:

1) Provide same-day open access to mental health:

Too many people are left waiting while their mental health gets worse. We are calling for same-day access to mental health support, so people can get help when they need it, not weeks or months later.

2) Make the online world and AI safer for mental health:

We want the UK government to work with us to build on the work we’ve started through our AI Commission, Mental Health in the Age of AI.

3) Listen carefully to mental health experts (like us!) and those with lived experience of mental health problems:

We’re ready to work with the new Prime Minister to make sure everyone can get safe, effective mental health support that's right for them, when they need it.

The world and ourselves can feel differently depending on our nervous system state

Safe:
* I don’t need to look for threats
* I can connect fully with my loved ones and others
* I feel freedom to play and to be creative

Fight / Flight:
* I spend a lot of time looking for threats
* I feel anxious
* I can’t sit still

Collapsed:
* No amount of sleep helps me to feel restored
* I feel disconnected from others / the world / from myself
* I feel shameful / I want to hide away

This is the meaning that we make out of the world when our internal nervous system state changes, this isn’t necessary the world changing

We can get stuck in states for a very long time and forget how to find our way back out

Therapy is about understanding where are we in our nervous system and how is that impacting the quality of our life. We learn how to map our pathways into other states ❤️‍🩹

Wondering whether to find a counsellor?

Counselling can be a daunting prospect. Who will they be, what will I have to talk about? What will I have to face, can I handle my emotions?

I hear these fears so very often as a counsellor. It can be really scary! I’ve so very rarely however experienced these fears come true. You can learn to build a healthy relationship with us, you can talk about what you need to (when you’re ready to), and you can handle your emotions

In private practice, any ethical counsellor will allow you to guide your own sessions. You decide when you want counselling sessions. You decide what you want to talk about and when you want to talk about it and if you change your mind then you stop. Stop talking about that thing, stop counselling or take a pause, and if you want to, then you come back. It’s all about what you need and we’ve got you in that 🫶🏼

Lots of love in your healing journeys ❤️‍🩹

Play is essential. Countless times I’ve seen a loss of play diminishing mental health
