Obituary for Trevor Sams
Managing Director, Physio-Control UK
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Trevor Sams, Managing Director of Physio-Control UK, whose dedication, leadership, and compassion left an enduring mark on colleagues, partners, and the wider medical technology community.
Trevor devoted his career to advancing lifesaving innovation. Under his leadership, Physio-Control UK strengthened its reputation for excellence in emergency medical response, delivering defibrillation and resuscitation solutions that have saved countless lives. It was in the late 70s that Trevor formed Physio-Control in the UK. In those days, we had the LIFEPAK 5 to introduce to the ambulance service, which was really the first truly light and portable pre-hospital defibrillator. Later in the 1980's Trevor helped develop the market for Pulse Oximetry, External Pacing and of course the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The UK Sales Team, of which I was a part of from 1987, had to convince the medical world that AEDs were the way forward. I remember Trevor was told in no uncertain terms by higher management that we were not to waste time selling defibrillators into the Pre-Hospital market. Trevor, of course, ignored that instruction and look where that has got us !!
If my memory serves me correctly, in the 1990s, Trevor led the UK company to 23 out of 24 top revenue sales in Europe.
Trevor’s vision was grounded in a simple but powerful belief — that technology, when guided by human compassion, can make the greatest difference in moments that matter most.
Known for his integrity, warmth, and tireless commitment to others, Trevor was not only an exceptional leader but also a mentor and friend to many. His steady guidance and genuine care inspired teams to strive for excellence while never losing sight of the people behind every achievement.
Beyond his professional success, Trevor was deeply devoted to his family and friends. He approached life with kindness, humour, and a generosity of spirit that touched all who knew him. It is probably not widely known that he also ventured into purchasing a couple of shoe shops and regularly reminded the team of his alleged expertise in shoes.
Trevor’s passing leaves a profound void, but his legacy will continue in the lives he influenced and the innovations he helped bring to the world.
He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his family, Physio-Control colleagues, and all our medical friends who had the privilege of knowing him.
