Small changes around the house can make a real difference for someone living with dementia. A few that often help:

👉 A post-it note by the front door: "check your keys."

👉 Photos on kitchen cupboards showing what's inside.

👉 A toilet seat in a contrasting colour so it stands out.

👉 Curtains drawn in the evening, so reflections in the window don't confuse.

Avoiding shiny floors, which can look wet and stop someone walking across them.

For so many of our clients, your visit is the highlight of the week. The thing that gets circled on the calendar. A walk to the fish and chip shop, an hour out somewhere familiar, a proper conversation with someone who listens.

It's not a job many people fall into by accident. But the ones who do it well tend to say the same thing: knowing you're the bit of the week someone looks forward to is a quiet kind of meaning you don't get from many other jobs.

When you pop in to check on a loved one, glance at the kitchen. Is the same glass on the side from yesterday? Is the squash bottle untouched in the cupboard?

Older adults often don't feel thirsty until they're already dehydrated.

A drink within reach of where they sit, not on the kitchen counter. Tea, squash, and soup all count. A glass with each meal turns it into routine rather than reminder. ☺️
