Postpartum psychosis is in the news at the moment it can be difficult to know what to think or understand what this condition actually is.

So we wanted to bring the conversation back to something really important ….. Postpartum psychosis is rare and it’s serious but it’s treatable.

It can develop very quickly after having a baby, and the person experiencing it may not realise that they are unwell.

That’s why recognising the signs matters, and why the people around a new mum can be so important.

If someone is becoming extremely confused, hearing or seeing things that aren’t there, experiencing unusual beliefs, becoming very agitated or behaving in a way that is completely out of character, please don’t ignore it.

Postpartum psychosis is a medical emergency and urgent help is needed.

But alongside the seriousness, there is another message I really want to share.

Recovery is possible.

Let’s make sure mums and their families know what to look for, know that help is available, and feel able to speak up when something doesn’t feel right.

If you suspect postpartum psychosis then then contact your GP urgently or call NHS 111. If there is immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E.

Action on Postpartum Psychosis is really good source of information and support.

This map tells a story that no family should have to live through.

It shows the variation in specialist perinatal mental health services across England, and highlights a reality we simply cannot ignore: where you live can determine the support you receive when you’re struggling after having a baby.

In North Yorkshire, too many mums are left without the level of specialist care they deserve. Yet travel just 30 miles to places like Leeds, and access to support is significantly better.

That isn’t fair.

Mental illness doesn’t stop at county borders, and neither should access to treatment.

No mum should have to wonder whether she’d receive better care simply because she lives in a different postcode.

This is why Lucy’s Legacy exists.

We are campaigning to end the postcode lottery of perinatal mental health care so that every parent, regardless of where they live, has access to timely, specialist support when they need it most.

Because where you live should never define whether you heal.

We are to grateful for the support of the MaternalMentalHealthAlliance Together, we can keep pushing for change. 💜

20/07/2026

When we looked at maternal mental health services across the country, we found huge inequalities in the care available to mums.

For example, In some areas, including parts of North Yorkshire, specialist maternal mental health support is only available until your baby is 12 months old. In other parts of the country, that support continues until a child is 24 months old.

Recovery doesn’t work to a postcode or a deadline so until these inequalities are addressed, Lucy’s Legacy will continue to campaign for fairer access to maternal mental health care while funding talking therapies for women across the Ryedale, Scarborough and Whitby areas.

If you or someone you know could benefit from counselling, please don’t hesitate to get in touch using the counselling link below.

Asking for support is a sign of strength, and you don’t have to face this alone 💜
