My lovely patient Julie came to the clinic in January after she'd been struggling with severe low back pain since October last year. She’d had back problems on and off for more than 30 years, but this time things had become much worse.
When she went to bed, her back pain would start within about 20 minutes. She couldn’t turn over properly during the night and the pain would wake her. She'd reached the point where she couldn’t get out of bed in the morning without her husband's help.
For the first couple of hours of each day, Julie couldn’t really do much. She needed time for her back to “get going”.
Her sleep was suffering, she was becoming less mobile and her husband was starting to take on more of a caring role. Understandably, Julie was exhausted and worried that this was how life was going to be.
The Sceptic
What makes Julie’s story even more unique is that she was initially very sceptical about chiropractic and alternative therapies. She wasn’t convinced they could help her, but decided to give it a try after feeling like she'd run out of options.
Finding the Right Approach
Julie originally thought IDD Therapy was going to be the best option for her. However, after her assessment and a closer look at her MRI, it became clear that chiropractic care was a better fit for her.
Her MRI showed some general wear and tear in her spine, including changes to the discs and small joints in her back. The good news was that there was no significant pressure on the nerves or spinal cord. This also matched her symptoms, as she wasn't experiencing pain, numbness or tingling down her legs.
Her assessment also found some areas of stiffness and restriction through her spine, as well as fallen arches in both feet and I recommended orthotics to help support her feet.
How Things Changed
The difference started surprisingly quickly.
Within the first week, Julie was sleeping better and no longer dreaded going to bed. Over the following weeks, she began to feel stronger, move more easily and regain her independence.
Three months on, Julie had about completed her initial programme and she was a different person!
She has started doing things she couldn't imagine doing when she first arrived. including several 5K walks and, on a recent holiday to Dubrovnik, even walked and climbed the city walls.
Julie’s Experience
“I kind of stumbled into finding The Chirohealth Clinic, out of desperation really, having been left feeling fobbed off by my GP, destined for a life on pain killers.
On my first assessment visit, I was blown away by the vibrant, friendly, welcoming atmosphere. I was desperate, exhausted with sleep deprivation, immobile, my husband was turning into my carer!
I was also a sceptic of ‘alternative health solutions!’ I was very fortunate to see Julia, who listened, made me feel welcome & that I mattered, reassured me (although she did describe me as a ‘wonky donkey!’).
Within 1 week, I was sleeping better, no longer dreading going to bed! Within weeks, I was feeling stronger, more mobile & independent.
Fast forward 6 months, my initial targeted programme has been completed. I am totally independent, walk unaided, can lift & carry the hoover & ironing board — my husband is obviously thrilled!
I don’t envisage running a marathon any day soon, but have done several 5K walks, and have just come back from a holiday, where in Dubrovnik, I did climb & walk the walls of the city! Absolutely incredible difference!
I have no hesitation in moving on to my next phase of monthly membership, and recommend the clinic whole heartedly. Thank you.”
Julie’s story is a great example of why it’s important to assess the person, not just the scan, and find an approach that is appropriate for you at whatever stage you're at.
Thanks for letting me share your story Julie 😘
