Kapil Care Homes is a family run group of care homes originally started by Dr. Gyan Kapil and his wife Pam in 1983. Their son Sunil Kapil is now Managing Director of the group and they have been joined by Kirsty Sutton who was apointed as a director in 2010.

The final round of games at the Carisbrooke Manor Olympics, and our residents saw it through in style.

This week it was darts (the soft-tip kind, no injuries to report) and floor bowls. The darts had people squinting at the board and taking their aim seriously, and the bowls brought out the tacticians, it turns out there's more to rolling a ball across a floor than you'd think.

That wraps up the games. A few weeks of discus, hoopla, balloon volleyball and more, and our residents took every one of them on with a proper competitive streak.

Now, about that staff 100m race we promised you. We regret to report it did not go ahead. The staff, it seems, developed cold feet at the last minute. The residents are still waiting for an explanation.

The medals and certificates are in, though, so there's one more to come.

Pamper day at Balmoral House, and Sharmin was the one making it happen.

Sharmin is one of our carers, and every so often she sets up a pamper session for our residents: manicures, hand massages, facials, the lot. This time round there were jam tarts and a drop of fizz to go with it, because a pamper day may as well be done properly.

Our residents were thoroughly looked after and, by the looks of it, in no hurry for it to end. She has a real knack for it.

Week two of the Olympics at Carisbrooke Manor, and the competitive streak is showing.

This week's events were the paper plate discus and the ring toss. The discus had people finding their range and going for distance. The ring toss came in two flavours: some going for hoopla, aiming rings onto the target, and others lobbing a beachball through a raised hoop. Both brought out a determined side in more than a few of our residents.

It's all in good fun, but nobody was there to make up the numbers.

Next week, the tables turn: it's the staff's turn to sweat, with the Carisbrooke staff 100m race. We'll let you know how they get on.

You don't often see a flamenco dancer at Balmoral House on a Tuesday. But then, it wasn't a normal Tuesday.

Sandra, never one to do a theme by halves, arrived in full flamenco costume for our Day in Spain, and set the tone for the whole afternoon. If you're going to bring Spain to Scunthorpe, you may as well commit.

And commit we did. There were Spanish words and phrases to get our tongues around, oranges sliced up for the table, and a Spanish omelette from Lorna in the kitchen that looked far too good to rush. A glass of sangria kept things going nicely. One resident settled in behind a fan and a book about Spain, doing her research in style.

A bit of sunshine, a bit of theatre, and lunch worth sitting down for. Not bad for a day that started in North Lincolnshire.

Ascot House is under new management.

Meet Trev, our newly appointed Resident Supervisor. He's got the badge to prove it, so it's official.

Trev keeps a close eye on things around here. He helps with the tea trolley, oversees the day-to-day running of the place, and makes sure standards are kept up. As Lynne put it: no one gets away with anything when Trev's around.

We feel much safer knowing he's on the case.

Cecil likes to lend a hand.

After tea at the weekend, he took it upon himself to help clear and tidy the dining room, sweeping the floor and setting the place back to rights.

There's a lot to be said for staying useful. For many of our residents, being able to help out with a familiar job is worth more than being waited on, it's a bit of purpose, a bit of routine, and the satisfaction of a good job done well. We're always happy to let Cecil get stuck in when he fancies it.

Nicely swept, Cecil. The place has never looked tidier.

The Olympics have come to Carisbrooke Manor.

We've signed our residents up to the Care Provider Olympics, a friendly competition that gets care homes and their residents moving and having a bit of fun together. It runs over several weeks through the summer, with homes taking part in all sorts of adapted sporting events, everything from balloon volleyball to bowls to a ring toss, and there's even a leaderboard and a trophy up for grabs.

The idea behind it is a good one. Staying active matters at every age, and keeping moving, however gently, helps our residents stay well, both in body and in spirits. That it happens to be great fun is rather the point.

Our first event was balloon volleyball. The rules are simple: keep the balloon moving between you, and don't let it touch down. It turned out to cause a surprising amount of competitive spirit, with plenty of laughing, and a good time had by all who joined in.

That's one event down, with more to come over the next few weeks. We'll keep you posted on how our team gets on.

After ten years keeping Ascot House running, Ian is hanging up his tools and heading off into retirement.

A good maintenance man is one of those people you truly appreciate when something needs fixing and there he is, already on it. For ten years, that's been Ian. But he's been much more than the person who kept the place working. He's been a familiar, friendly face around the home, and someone our residents and staff have thought a great deal of.

He'll be missed, and not just for his handiwork. We hope retirement brings him every bit of the rest he deserves.

Thank you for ten years, Ian. Enjoy it, you've earned it.

Shirley has got behind England in style this year. Her room at Ascot House has been given the full England treatment, and she's been staying up to watch the matches and celebrate the results in her England wig and sash.

We asked what's behind the effort this year. Shirley said: "It's coming home this year, as I won't be here when the next World Cup plays. It's every four years, and I'm almost 91 now."

You can't argue with that. Come on England, let's do it for Shirley.

Some people just become part of the fabric of a place, and Donna is one of them.

She was with us right at the start, helping open the doors at Balmoral House and working nights to get the new home up and running. She moved on for a while, and we were very glad to have her back. All told, she's now given us ten years.

In that time she's turned her hand to just about every job we have, and two years ago she took on the role of Deputy Manager at Carisbrooke Manor. Wherever she's been, she's been the sort of person a home is lucky to have.

We asked Donna what's kept her here. She said it's about making a difference to people's lives, and that we're a family orientated company. That's Donna all over, and it's exactly why she's so valued here.

Congratulations, Donna. Thank you for ten years, and for everything you bring to us and to our residents.
