Why is it important to have a sense of your body?
Well, in my work I often find that there are lots of reasons why someone may have become disconnected. It could be trauma, early sensory issues or intolerance that could have felt painful, a sense of not looking how you feel you ‘should’, parental focus on academic achievement or parts of you rather than the whole picture…
Stress also disconnects us quite naturally as our body system will put all of its effort into keeping us alive or small or hidden.
We may not notice that we only breathe in a very shallow way, or that we can’t remember the last time we were conscious of how our feet or arms or stomach felt.
We forget that this companion that is our body is actually essential for our survival and that we may need to start to make friends with our body.
The other thing we might do is to assign feelings to parts or all of our body and get stuck in feeling angry or upset about the function of our body. Fertility, injury, disability, they can all feed into the loop of “there is something wrong with me, I am not good enough, I am unlovable etc”
There may be a need for acceptance or there may be actions that could be taken. Without fail there needs to be a sense of moving towards compassion and love for all of our body, and they can feel hard if not impossible!
Just start small. Maybe just look closely at your hands or feel a part of your skin and be curious about what emerges.
I’m here if you want to explore this a little more…
