You may have seen the term Human Givens therapist on our website - but what does it actually mean?

Human Givens is a practical, evidence-informed approach that looks at the whole person: what’s happening in your life, what you might need, and the strengths and resources you already have.

Rather than focusing only on what’s wrong, sessions can help you understand patterns, manage difficult emotions and explore practical ways to move forward.

Because mental health support isn’t one-size-fits-all. What helps one person might look completely different for someone else.

At One Step Borders, our team includes Human Givens psychotherapy as part of the support available to young people aged 16–25 across the Scottish Borders.

Think this kind of support could help you?

You don’t need to know exactly what you need before reaching out. Visit our website to find out more or self-refer for support today.

We’re proud to work alongside organisations and services across the Scottish Borders to make mental health and wellbeing support more accessible to young people.

From being recognised as meeting a real need in our community, to providing trauma-informed support within Borders College and being included within local NHS resources, these partnerships help connect more young people with support when they need it.

Working together means stronger pathways to support - and more opportunities for young people to take that first step toward better mental health.

💛 One Step Borders supports young people aged 16–25 across the Scottish Borders and we are currently open to new referrals, if you would like more information please visit our website www.onestepborders.info

Mental health doesn’t always move in a straight line.

There can be good days where things feel lighter, hard days where even small things feel overwhelming, and plenty of days somewhere in between.

Having a good day doesn’t mean you’re no longer struggling. Having a hard day doesn’t mean you’ve lost the progress you’ve made. Sometimes progress is simply beginning to understand yourself a little better.

Wherever you are today, you don’t have to wait until things feel at their worst to reach out for support.

💛 One Step Borders provides mental health and wellbeing support for young people aged 16–25 across the Scottish Borders.

We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with Borders College!

From 7 September, One Step Borders will be delivering mental health and wellbeing support to students at the college two days a week.

Working directly within the college helps make support more accessible, giving students a place to reach out, talk to someone and access support when they need it.

We’re looking forward to continuing to work alongside the Borders College community and supporting young people throughout the year.

What does the impact of mental health support actually look like?

For one young person, it might mean finding the confidence to leave the house more often. For another, it could be starting college, building new relationships or becoming more independent.

In 2024–25, 96.8% of young people showed a 10+ point improvement in their wellbeing after receiving support from One Step Borders - Behind that number are individual journeys, challenges and steps forward, both big and small.

Whatever your first step looks like, you don’t have to take it alone. We are currently accepting new referrals so please get in touch if you or someone you know would benefit from support.

Wondering what actually happens in a support session? 💭

There’s no set script and no pressure to know exactly what you want to talk about.
You might want to talk about anxiety, relationships, family, confidence, work, college, or simply how things have been feeling lately. And if you’re not sure where to begin, that’s okay too.

Our sessions give you space to talk, feel heard and explore what’s going on for you and we always go at your own pace.

If you’re aged 16–25 and living in the Scottish Borders, you can self-refer to One Step Borders for support.

Looking for support with employment or your next steps? 💼

Finding work isn’t always just about CVs and applications. Confidence, wellbeing and motivation can all play a part too.

That’s why we think it’s important for young people to know about the different kinds of support available across the Scottish Borders.

Works+ supports young people aged 16–24 who are unemployed and looking for help with their next steps — from job searching and interview preparation to building confidence, developing workplace skills and gaining practical experience.

At One Step Borders, we know that employment, purpose, connection and mental wellbeing can be closely linked. Knowing where to turn for practical support can be an important part of moving forward.
