A remarkable achievement for our very own Mr Neruban Kumaran and an important moment for the future of eyecare. 👏

11-year-old Catherine L’Estrange has become the first patient in the UK, and only the second in the world, to receive a pioneering gene therapy for Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), a rare genetic condition that can cause progressive sight loss.

The procedure was performed by Ü Vision Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Mr Neruban Kumaran, delivering healthy copies of a gene directly into the retina with the aim of preserving Catherine’s remaining vision.

For Catherine and her family, this treatment brings new hope. For the wider field of ophthalmology, it represents an exciting step forward in the treatment of inherited retinal disease.

We are incredibly proud to have consultants of Neruban’s calibre as part of the Ü Vision team and would like to congratulate him and everyone involved in this groundbreaking work.

Using warm compresses every day but still struggling with dry eyes?

Warm compresses can be helpful, particularly when the meibomian glands in the eyelids become blocked. But for some people, they may not be enough to address the underlying obstruction and inflammation.

These tiny glands produce the oily layer of your tear film, helping to prevent your tears from evaporating too quickly. When they aren’t functioning properly, symptoms can include burning, grittiness, watery eyes and fluctuating vision.

At Ü Vision, we can take a more targeted approach to dry eye treatment. IPL uses controlled pulses of light around the eyelids to help reduce inflammation and support healthier meibomian gland function. This can also be combined with meibomian gland expression to gently clear blocked oils.

The aim is to go beyond temporary relief and understand and treat the underlying cause of your dry eye symptoms.

The Eye in a Different Light 👁️✨

What looks like a stunning stained-glass window is actually a rare, close-up look inside the human eye.

This beautiful effect is called iris transillumination, and it can be a characteristic sign of Pigment Dispersion Syndrome (PDS):

• The cause: Tiny pigment granules can rub off the back of the iris, leaving areas where light can pass through more easily.

• The glow: When light is shone into the eye, it can pass through these areas, creating this striking effect.

• Why it matters: The released pigment can accumulate in the eye’s drainage system, potentially increasing eye pressure and, in some cases, contributing to pigmentary glaucoma.

Many people with PDS may experience no obvious symptoms, which is why regular eye examinations and appropriate monitoring can be so important for protecting your long-term eye health.

Beautifully complex, and another reminder of just how remarkable our eyes really are.
