🩸✨ Breast milk is made from blood, not directly from what you eat until nutrients reaches your blood stream.

Your body uses nutrients from your bloodstream to make milk that's uniquely designed for your baby. Even when your diet isn't perfect, your body can often draw on nutrient stores to support milk production.

This is why, for most breastfeeding families, foods that make you gassy don't make your baby gassy. Gas is produced in your intestines it doesn't pass into your breast milk. Occasionally, you could consume foods with proteins which impact baby's digestion, but this isn't common, and when gas occurs, it is rarely a concern. Uncomfortable, yes, abnormal concern? Rarely.

There are always exceptions. Some babies have conditions such as cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) or milk soy protein intolerance (MSPI), where proteins from certain foods can trigger symptoms. In those cases, dietary changes may be recommended.

But for the average healthy breastfeeding parent and baby, specialty elimination diets aren't necessary. Most newborn gas, fussiness, and frequent feeding are normal parts of infancy, not signs that your diet is causing a problem.

Some women are sensitive to certain herbs, but in culinary levels, it's rarely a problem. But keep an eye if you have concerns.

If your baby has concerning problems you think might be associated with your diet, seek the support of an IBCLC and follow up with baby's pediatrician.

✨️ Evidence matters. So does reassurance.

One really frustrating situation for both women and midwives is the sudden appearance of a fever in a mum or baby after an epidural.

This can lead to a cascade of tests and antibiotics, even though most practitioners already know that no infection is likely to be present.

I first wrote about this phenomenon - epidural fever - in 2002, when I was working on postnatal wards and seeing it for myself.

I decided to have another look at this topic recently, and I learned that the research has come even further since then.

In particular, we now have more understanding of why this happens.

So I have completely rewritten my blog post.

In it, I describe the phenomenon and how often it occurs, look at the evidence on this topic, explain the issues, and suggest how women and practitioners can use this evidence in decision making.

You can read the blog post at https://www.sarawickham.com/questions-and-answers/epidural-fever/

I hope you find it useful.

πŸŽ’ Is your hospital bag packed yet?

This handy guide uses information from the NHS Hospital Bag Checklist to help you get organised before your little one arrives. πŸ’™

To help you feel prepared for your stay, please remember to pack plenty of your own essential supplies, as these are unfortunately not provided by the hospital. We particularly recommend bringing plenty of:
Maternity pads
Nappies
Cotton wool or water wipes

πŸ’™ Don't forget your birth partner! We recommend bringing plenty of snacks, drinks and food to keep them comfortable during their stay, as meals are routinely not provided for birth partners.

β˜• Costa Coffee
πŸ›οΈ WHSmith
🍽️ Hospital canteen
are all available at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, and food deliveries can be collected from the main entrance if needed.

"The people who claim that induction leads to fewer caesareans are quoting the results of one study, the ARRIVE Trial, which was flawed, and did not reflect real world maternity care.
In the real world, having your labour induced increases your chance of having a caesarean." Thanks much sarawickham.com for comprehensive summary of real-world studies. https://www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/induction-increases-caesarean/
