I'm always saying 'age is only a number'

And this wonderful lady proves it.

Probably taking my record of patient ages, at 98 she has recently rehab.d from a hip fracture,

And her gait pattern showed a shorter stride of the opposite leg, specifically limited by a stiff ankle & toe joints,

likely from her time of not loading through the foot as normal.

Her strength around the hips and knees was fab, but we needed to add some toe exercises.

Some graded joint mobilisations later, and a simple break-down of gait re-ed,

She now walks feeling freer.

Just shows, Physio is for everyone, as long as we adapt to keep it person-centered.

And more years on the clock isn't a valid excuse for not doing something -humans and horses!

(And how versatile it is when your horse's Physiotherapist is qualified & experienced to treat the family)

(Also what a beautiful office to treat in compared to an NHS hospital ๐Ÿ˜„)

What i do ISN'T relaxing. But the body needs to restore.

I don't give massages. I do proper physio.
-targeted treatment of whatever is hurting/stiff/limiting,

And Scarlett here isnโ€™t the only one that has fallen asleep straight after

Including a few humans that have a tendency to fall asleep even during!

I didn't understand it, cos it's often uncomfortable releasing certain things,

But now I get it.

Sleep is restorative.

We make a big change in the body, and it suddenly feels a need to recover & reboot...

Like the old classic 'switch it off n on again' when a computer isn't working.

But just how cute is the pony, gently blowing the shavings & trusting us enough to not keep her eyes open ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅฐ

Love a mystery parcel!
(It had no name on, and I'd pre-ordered months ago so forgot it was coming)

Dunno when I'm gonna find time to read it,
But am very looking forward to it ๐Ÿ˜

Really pleased with Bee's progress, from being very stiff through her thoracic & lumbar spine,
To having a nice wiggle available ๐Ÿ˜Š

All that pressure on her back from being pregnant,
A few Physio sessions and she's ready to be backed in a healthy way

Teaching a horsey owner how to use therapeutic Ultrasound, for his Suspensories.

Just a reminder that I have various equipment I can loan out, so you can do much more frequent treatments than needing appointments.

Whatever the horse's injury/ailment is, you can ask me what is actually the most effective, evidence-based thing to use;

-not just follow trends with the latest 'in' machine!

(Or whatever someone needs to make money from)

People still believe you need a strong 'core' to ride well. Tosh!

Bracing your abs ESPECIALLY if your lower back or hips were already stiff,

makes your body even more resistant to moving with the rhythm of the horse's back.

Work on loosening up before any strengthening

I find pain and/or joint stiffness all the time,
But it doesn't automatically mean pathology;

You can absolutely have bits of a body that aren't functioning normally,

WITHOUT there being anything actually wrong -or a disease process.

Sometimes (often actually) you can just find the stiff/sore bit, loosen it up, and no further investigation or treatment is needed.

So don't panic when I find something!

Cos i pretty much always do ;-)

Tom was described to me as a stressy horse, he might be difficult to treat.

His owner wanted a Physio appointment for him because he had been head-tossing in canter or any contact, since she she got him 3 weeks ago.

When I looked at him, he was very wary of somebody approaching,
And normally I go to horses' shoulders n offer a scratch over their withers

But he was different.

He did not want that.

I could tell straight away, no idea how, that that's actually where he hurt.
He wasn't stressed about me touching the hind half of his body, just very guarded of his shoulders & neck.

That's so unusual for a horse, it wasn't personality. It had to be pain.

So I did my usual full assessment, and of course he wasn't lame, but his gait showed limited shoulder movement and spinal muscle spasm every time he landed in trot.

His leg joints were all fine, nothing abnormal about his tendons & ligaments, and lumbar spine & pelvis no problem.

But his entire shoulder girdle was tight, tender and he just gave me some looks when I 'got the bits'.
His withers (T2-6) were very stiff and sore.

His nuchal ligament was tender from the lack of gliding over the thoracic spinal processes, but it didn't feel like the problem itself. And his poll was actually fine.

Actually all his facial muscles were fine.
Cos normally you'd expect head tossing to be a problem around the head end!

But what Tom needed, what i did, was loads of soft tissue release of his triceps, deltoids, lat.dorsi, shoulder girdle tractions, and spinal joint mobilisations to allow freedom through his withers.

He did about 20 yawns in a row when I felt his right shoulder 'give'.

He finished the session in a very sleepy state -a huge shift from the guarded horse I went in with.

So I drove away actually buzzin'. I kinda knew we'd achieved something good, but obviously I never count my chickens!

You never really know if what you've done will change any behaviours afterwards, cos they can be complex multifactorial issues.

So to then get this message a few days later was pretty darn cool ๐Ÿ˜
