Jake Harrison Therapies

Jake Harrison Therapies Promoting Optimal Health & Performance through Sports Therapy. Hi! I also attend the gym to create strong foundations for my chosen sports.

Thanks for visiting my page, I'm Jake, my hobbies are Cycling, Hiking, Yoga and occasionally Running! Personally and Professionally I am an analytical individual who is always seeking answers to issues related to the body. Sports massage is a form of massage involving the manipulation of soft tissue to benefit a person engaged in regular physical activity. Soft tissue is connective tissue that has

not hardened into bone and cartilage; it includes skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia (a form of connective tissue that lines and ensheathes the other soft tissues). Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused from repetitive and strenuous activity and trauma. The application of sports massage, prior to and after exercise, may enhance performance, aid recovery and prevent injury.

Last week we covered why stretching isn’t fixing it. This week, how hard rehab should actually feel 👇

‘No pain no gain’ flares people up. ‘Never push into pain’ keeps them weak. The useful answer sits in the middle.

A good working window: discomfort around 3 or 4 out of 10 while you train.

It should settle back to normal within about 24 hours.

And over the weeks, the same session should trend easier. That’s the sign you’re building tolerance, not poking the alarm.

DM MOVE if you don’t know which side of the line you’re on.

Where are you in your rehab right now? Drop it in the comments.

“It’s okay for you because...”

How often have you said that about someone else’s result, then quietly let yourself off the hook?

You watch someone hit a goal. Lose the weight. Build the strength. Get back to training after an injury. And straight away you find the reason it does not apply to you.

They had more time. Better genetics. No kids. No injury history. A better set up.

The reasons feel true. That is exactly what makes them so easy to hide behind.

Now swap the question. Instead of “it is okay for them because”, try “if they can do it, why can’t I”.

Same person. Same list of reasons. Completely different question. One keeps you standing still. The other makes you look for what is actually within your control.

That shift changes more than training. It changes how you show up for your own health, full stop.

If you need more than just a prescription and someone to take the time to walk through the process with you, DM me ‘MOVE’

Stretching feels good. But if it keeps coming back tight, here’s what’s actually going on 👇

That tight feeling often isn’t a short muscle. It’s a muscle that doesn’t have the strength for what you’re asking of it.

So it protects. And protection feels like tightness.

Stretching eases it for an hour. Loading changes what it can cope with.

That’s why the calves that get stretched daily stay tight, and the ones that get strong stop complaining.

Send this to someone who stretches every day and stays tight.

And if you’re stuck in that loop, DM MOVE and we’ll find what your body’s actually asking for.

Sciatica disc herniations

If you’ve been told there’s something showing up on your scan, you’ve probably heard the size mentioned. Bigger bulge. More pressing on the nerve. It sounds like the more there is, the worse it should be.

It isn’t that simple. How much shows up on imaging has no reliable link to how much pain you’re in, or how well you recover. Some of the biggest findings settle the fastest.

That’s true for sciatica caused by a disc issue. The size of it matters less than what you do next: understanding what’s happening, staying active within what you can tolerate, adjusting what keeps flaring it, and calm things down with specific exercises/mobilisations. (Search nerve flossing)

July Roundup, been a bit mental tbh but sometimes you have to just accept it’ll be hard and dive in!

Loads of improvements going on inside the business, transition and change often brings challenges but we keep moving forward!

Highlights are:
- partnering with
- New website and upgraded resources
- New treatment couch
- New and improved entrance to the clinic (from Tuesday)
- New exercise programming app

22/07/2026

Last week, why pain flares when you changed nothing. This week, three ways to calm one, none of them rest 👇

One. Modify, don’t stop. Drop the range, the load or the pace until it settles. Moving within tolerance keeps the system calm.

Two. Keep the rest of you training. Work around it, not through it. Fitness you keep now is rehab you skip later.

Three. Protect your sleep. It is when sensitivity settles. Guard the hours even when the week is chaos.

A flare feels like damage. Mostly it is the dial turned up. Dials turn back down.

If every flare costs you three weeks, DM MOVE or click the link for access to free guides and tools.

"A bit of exercise and a bit of manual therapy."

That's the phrase Jeremy Lewis, Paul Mintken and Amy McDevitt talk about in their 2025 editorial in the Journal of Manual & Manipulative Therapy.

Their point isn't that exercise and manual therapy don't work. It's that we've built a profession around two interventions with modest effect sizes, and then justified them with mechanistic stories the evidence doesn't support.

Meanwhile, MSK pain accounts for more years lived with disability than any other group of health conditions on the planet.

What the authors propose is a shift in scope:

→ From "I can fix you" to "I can work with you"
→ From technique-centred practice to person-centred, lifestyle-informed care
→ From passive recipient to active partner in shared decision making

The clinician of the future, they argue, is an expert in assessing lifestyle factors — sleep, physical activity, diet, smoking, stress — able to discuss those findings sensitively, and skilled in supporting behavioural change.

This sits right at the heart of what we teach at MTE. Hands-on skills matter. So does honest communication about what they can and can't do. The two aren't in conflict.

What do you think — are we ready for this evolution?

Last week we covered why pain tracks your week. This week, why it can hurt more when you did nothing to it 👇

Your tissues have a tolerance. Sleep, stress and recovery set where that line sits.

A rough night and a stressful fortnight lower it. Same desk, same run, same lifting. Less capacity to handle it.

So the pain isn’t telling you that you damaged something yesterday. It’s telling you the buffer has shrunk.

Rebuild the buffer and the same load stops being a problem.

DM ‘MOVE’ if this sounds familiar and we’ll work out where your buffer has gone.

What was your week like the last time it flared? Tell me below.
