My husband started coming home early every Friday. After eleven years of marriage, I knew something had changed.
Friday has always been my husband's day to “unwind with the boys.” I've complained about it before, but eventually I accepted it.
Then three months ago, he came home at 6:15 p.m.
The following Friday, 6:30.
Then he started coming home with things. Flowers. My favourite chocolate. One Friday, takeaway so I wouldn't have to cook.
Please, I wasn't complaining.
But when a man you've known for thirteen years suddenly downloads an update you didn't install, you check the settings. 😂
I asked what happened to his friends.
“Nothing. I just prefer coming home these days.”
Hmm.
Then I noticed something else.
Every Friday around 5 p.m., someone would message him. He'd read it, sometimes smile, and shortly afterwards he'd leave work and come home.
One Friday, I finally asked:
“Is there another woman?”
He looked genuinely shocked.
Then he started laughing, picked up his phone and handed it to me.
“Read.”
The messages were from his colleague, Daniel.
Every Friday, almost the same thing:
“Go home. Your family is waiting.”
Another said:
“Don't make my mistake. Go and enjoy what you have.”
Daniel's wife had died suddenly four months earlier.
My husband told me that one Friday after work, while everyone was discussing where to hang out, Daniel quietly said:
“You people are always looking for reasons not to go home. I'd give everything I own to have somewhere to rush home to.”
Apparently, that sentence followed my husband home.
He started thinking about all the Fridays he'd spent “unwinding” while assuming his wife and family would always be waiting.
So now Daniel messages him every Friday:
Go home.
I felt terrible for suspecting him, but I still asked:
“Why did another man have to lose his wife before you realised you wanted to spend more time with yours?”
He went quiet.
Then said:
“Sometimes something becomes so ordinary to you that you forget it's temporary.”
Last Friday, he came home early again.
This time, I didn't ask who had messaged him.
For weeks, I thought another woman was pulling my husband away from me.
It turned out another man's wife was sending him home.
Would you have suspected him too?
