If you've been following our posts you'll know that protein isn't the only nutrient that matters for recovery.

When you’re training regularly, recovering from injury, or simply thinking about staying strong and healthy as you get older, healthy fats deserve a place on your plate.

They’re not just about calories or cooking.

Healthy fats support cell health: every cell in your body has a membrane made largely from fats.

Omega-3 fats support your body’s inflammatory response: important when your body is continually repairing and adapting to exercise.

Your brain needs fat: dietary fats are important for brain structure and function, making them relevant to focus, cognition and healthy ageing.

They support cardiovascular and metabolic health: both important pieces of the longevity puzzle.

And there’s another reason I don't like seeing people unnecessarily cutting fats from their diet: recovery requires more than protein.

Your body needs enough energy, carbohydrate, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals to repair, adapt and perform.

So rather than asking “How much protein should I eat?” ask:

“Am I giving my body everything it needs to recover well?”

Good sources of healthy fats include oily fish, extra virgin olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocado and olives.

The goal isn't to eat more fat for the sake of it. It's to make sure you're getting the right fats, in the right overall dietary pattern, alongside enough energy and protein.

Because recovery, performance and longevity aren't built from one nutrient. They're built from the whole picture.

“I’m just a weekend runner, why should I be interested in an Infrared Sauna?”

This is a common question amongst runners, cyclists and in other sports, but it's important to note: recovery isn't reserved for elite athletes.

Whether you're running 5K at the weekend, heading out for a long cycle or fitting your exercise around a busy working week, your body still has to recover from the demands you put on it.

An infrared sauna uses infrared light to warm the body directly, rather than simply heating the surrounding air like a traditional sauna. This allows you to experience a warming, sweating session at a lower ambient temperature.

For recreational exercise, the appeal may be less about chasing the latest performance hack and more about creating a regular opportunity to:

- Relax tight, tired muscles
- Support circulation
- Wind down after a busy week
- Make recovery part of your routine
- Simply feel good!

There is growing research into infrared sauna and exercise recovery, although it's important not to overstate the evidence, although there is a lot out there on the benefits, it isn't a magic recovery treatment and doesn't replace the fundamentals of good nutrition, hydration, sleep and appropriate rest.

But if you're already exercising regularly, an infrared sauna could be a useful addition to your recovery routine.

You don't have to be training for an Ironman to take your recovery seriously.

Sheffield osteopaths - we’d love to hear from you!

We’re looking to connect with osteopaths in Sheffield who are interested in collaborating with a wider team of health and wellbeing practitioners.

Perhaps you’re looking for a professional space to see your own clients, or you’d like to work alongside practitioners from different disciplines and create a more joined-up approach to client care.

We have treatment room space available within our clinic and would love to connect with osteopaths who are looking for:

✨ A professional, welcoming clinic environment
✨ Treatment room space
✨ Opportunities to collaborate and cross-refer with other practitioners
✨ A multidisciplinary approach to supporting clients
✨ A space where you can grow your practice without having to manage everything yourself

We believe that clients benefit when practitioners work together rather than in isolation, particularly when their health, recovery and wellbeing require more than one piece of the puzzle.

If you're an osteopath based in Sheffield and this sounds like something you'd be interested in, send us a DM.

We'd love to have a conversation and see whether we could work well together.

If you love open water or wild swimming, your gut might have something to say about it!

And you don't have to be a triathlete or endurance swimmer for this to matter.

When you swim in rivers, lakes or the sea, it's very easy to swallow small amounts of water without even realising it. Depending on the water quality, that water can contain microorganisms that your gut isn't particularly happy about.

For some people, this can trigger symptoms such as:

• Diarrhoea or looser stools
• Abdominal cramping
• Bloating and changes in digestion
• Nausea
• Increased urgency to use the toilet
• Fatigue and feeling generally unwell

Sometimes the symptoms are short lived. But if your digestive problems persist, keep returning after swimming, or you've noticed a change in your gut health that you can't explain, it may be worth investigating further.

A functional stool test can look for specific gastrointestinal pathogens and other markers that may help identify what's going on in your gut.

Because you shouldn't necessarily have to give up something you love just because your gut isn't happy afterwards.

If you're an open water swimmer struggling with unexplained digestive symptoms, it's worth looking beyond simply cutting foods out of your diet and finding out what's actually happening.

Your gut may be giving you a clue.

When you're recovering from an injury or illness, protein often becomes the focus.

And yes, of course, protein is incredibly important. Your body needs amino acids to repair and rebuild tissue.

But protein isn't the whole recovery story.

Carbohydrate is often overlooked, particularly by people who are trying to reduce calories or keep carbohydrates low.

During recovery, your body needs sufficient energy to support the increased demands of healing. Carbohydrate is an important source of that energy and can help reduce the need to use protein as a fuel source, allowing more of those amino acids to be available for tissue repair.

And there's another reason not to overlook carbohydrates: your immune system also has significant energy demands when you're fighting illness.

So if you're recovering from surgery, an injury, illness or a period of intense training, don't fall into the trap of thinking that adding more protein is automatically the answer.

The bigger question is:

Are you giving your body enough of everything it needs to recover?

That means looking at your overall energy intake, protein, carbohydrate, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, hydration and the quality of your diet.

Recovery is a process and nutrition should support the whole process, not just one nutrient.

If you're training regularly or recovering from an injury and you're unsure whether your diet is actually supporting your recovery, this is exactly the sort of thing we look at in a nutritional assessment.

Get in touch now to find out more about getting a tailored nutrition programme that can support your health goals.

If you're considering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, it's worth knowing that one session shouldn't necessarily be viewed as the test of whether HBOT “works” for you.

HBOT is generally approached as a course of treatments, rather than a one-off intervention.

You may feel something after an individual session – perhaps relaxed or refreshed – but the potential benefits you're looking for are better considered over repeated, regular sessions.

The right number and frequency will depend on why you're using HBOT, your individual circumstances and the type of chamber being used.

So rather than booking one session and asking “Did it work?”, think:

“What could I achieve from a consistent course of sessions?”

If you're curious about HBOT for recovery, wellbeing or performance, speak to us about whether it could be appropriate for you and what a sensible course might look like.

There are numerous reasons why you may experience unwanted digestive symptoms - cramping, bloating, discomfort, diarrhoea - or why you may find that it takes you longer to recover after training sessions.

One possibility is that you have developed a sensitivity to a particular food protein. Such a sensitivity can trigger an over-reaction in the immune system resulting in these symptoms and more...are you constantly fatigued or unable to focus?

By identifying and removing trigger foods (for a short period of time - not permanently) we've seen many clients resolve their symptoms and enjoy better health, faster recovery and improved performance.

We offer a simple finger-prick blood test to identify possible food triggers so that you can then be guided through a process to address these symptoms. Exclusion is considered and non-permanent, which is why we work closely with you to monitor you and provide the necessary adjustments and support along the way.

If you'd like to find out more about the process, drop us a DM or email [email protected].
