🧸 Could your child's hearing be affecting their learning or communication?

Children don't always realise they're having difficulty hearing, and the signs can sometimes be mistaken for something else.

Some things to look out for include:

👂 Frequently asking "What?" or "Pardon?"
📚 Difficulty following instructions
🗣️ Delayed speech or unclear pronunciation
🎵 Turning the volume up louder than expected
🏫 Struggling to concentrate at school

The good news is that identifying hearing concerns early can make a real difference to a child's confidence, communication and development.

At Byrom Audiology, our specialist children's hearing assessments are designed to provide clear answers and reassurance for families.

👂 **Could these be the early signs of hearing loss?**

Hearing loss often develops gradually, so it can be difficult to recognise at first. Many people simply adapt without realising their hearing has changed.

Some common signs include:

📺 Turning the TV up louder than everyone else
❓ Frequently asking people to repeat themselves
☕ Struggling to follow conversations in busy places
📞 Finding phone calls more difficult than before
😴 Feeling tired after social situations because you're concentrating so hard to hear

If any of these sound familiar, a professional hearing assessment can provide reassurance and, if needed, help you explore the best options.

At Byrom Audiology, we're here to offer friendly, independent advice with no pressure—just expert hearing care tailored to you.

From beer gardens and outdoor markets to low-flying holiday flights, summer is full of bursts of loud background noise. But if you're turning your headphones up to full volume to drown out the crowds, you might be exposing your ears to gradual, painless damage.

Noise-induced hearing loss doesn't happen overnight, making it incredibly easy to miss until the damage is already done.

To protect your hearing while enjoying your summer playlists, try the 60/60 Rule:
🎧 Keep your volume levels under 60%.
⏱️ Limit your continuous listening to 60 minutes at a time.
🤫 Switch to noise-cancelling headphones—they block out external noise so you don't feel the urge to crank up the volume.

If your ears ring or feel dull after an outdoor event or a long session with your headphones, that’s your ears telling you they’ve been overexposed.

We build bespoke, custom ear protection solutions for swimmers, travellers, and music lovers right here in South Yorkshire.

👂We've recently been asked why our hearing feels a bit muffled or "stuffy" as the temperature rises. It’s not your imagination - summer weather actually does change how your ears behave!

Rising temperatures and high humidity prompt the glands in your ear canal to produce more earwax. If you already experience wax build-up or wear hearing aids, this sudden seasonal shift can easily lead to uncomfortable blockages or dampened sound.

Before you pack your bags for a summer getaway, here are 3 quick steps to protect your hearing health:

📦 Pack a dedicated drying kit or dehumidifier to protect your hearing aids from sweat and humidity overnight.
🚗 Never leave your devices in direct sunlight or a hot vehicle—extreme heat can damage the delicate casing.
🏊 Avoid swimming with your hearing aids in, and use water protection if you’re prone to ear infections.

If your ears are already feeling completely blocked, don't resort to DIY cotton buds (which only push the wax deeper!). Come and see us for a bit of seasonal wax removal relief!

💦 Sun, Sweat and Sudden Downpours - the British Summer Hearing Aid Emergency: The Water Rules.

It’s the ultimate summer nightmare: stepping into the holiday pool, getting caught in a sudden South Yorkshire downpour, or realising you forgot to take your hearing aids out before a shower! 🌧️🏊

If your devices get a sudden soaking this summer, don't panic—but act fast. What you do in the first 5 minutes can save your technology.

🛑 The Emergency 3-Step Rescue Plan:

1️⃣ Power Down Immediately: Take them out and turn them off. Never try to "test if they still work" while wet—this causes a short-circuit.
2️⃣ Open the Doors: If they use traditional batteries, open the battery drawer completely and discard the wet battery. Leave the compartment wide open to air out.
3️⃣ Dry Naturally: Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and leave them on a dry towel in a warm room.

⚠️ CRITICAL: Never use a hairdryer, microwave, or put them on a hot radiator. Direct, artificial heat will melt the micro-components inside.

(And skip the uncooked rice trick—the fine dust will just clog the microphone!).

If you feel like you’re asking people to repeat themselves more often lately, it might not be your hearing aids—it could be the weather. ☀️

High temperatures and summer humidity stimulate the glands in your ear canal to produce more sweat and oil. For many people, this triggers a sudden surge in earwax production.

If you already wear hearing aids, that extra wax has nowhere to go. It quickly builds up, blocks your sound ports, and leaves your hearing feeling completely muffled or "underwater."

🦻 Quick Check: If your device sounds quiet or distorted today, use your brush tool to check the wax guard right now. It’s the most common cause of a summer breakdown.

Don't let a sudden blockage ruin your summer holiday plans. If your ears feel full or uncomfortable, our team is here to help with safe, gentle micro-suction.
