Happy Pride!
Pride Month can be especially important in foster care because LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately represented in the foster care system and often face unique challenges.
Some reasons it matters:
LGBTQ+ youth are overrepresented in foster care. Research has found that LGBTQ+ youth enter foster care at higher rates than their non-LGBTQ+ peers, often due to family rejection, conflict related to their identity, or experiences of abuse and neglect.
They face higher risks of instability. LGBTQ+ youth in foster care may experience more placement disruptions, discrimination, bullying, or difficulty finding affirming caregivers.
Visibility and affirmation can improve well-being. Pride Month can help children and young people see that their identities are recognised and respected. Feeling accepted by caregivers, social workers, schools, and communities is associated with better mental health outcomes.
It highlights the need for inclusive care. Pride Month often prompts conversations about training foster parents, supporting LGBTQ+ youth, respecting chosen names and pronouns, and ensuring safe placements.
It helps build community. Many LGBTQ+ foster youth have experienced isolation. Pride events, support groups, and affirming organizations can provide connection and role models.
It raises awareness of ongoing challenges. Pride Month can draw attention to issues such as homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth aging out of foster care, disparities in mental health outcomes, and the need for policies that protect all young people in care.
Pride Month can be an opportunity to reinforce a simple but important message: every young person in care deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Pride is a perfect time to start having conversations at home and to celebrate all types of families and individuals. Read on to find out more:
