Sight Concern is delighted to be joining Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire’s ‘Just Ask’ event in Shefford High Street on Thursday 13th August. We’ll be there from 11.30 am – 1.30 pm. Please pop by and chat to us about services and living aids to support blind and partially sighted people.

Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire will be there from 9 am– 1.30 pm to provide information, advice and guidance about local social care, health, housing and additional services. Other local organisations will also be there offering advice.

🌒 Ready for tomorrow evening’s Partial Solar Eclipse? Read this before you look up! ☀️
Tomorrow, Wednesday 12th August, the UK will experience one of the most dramatic solar eclipses in over 20 years, with over 90% of the Sun covered by the Moon right around 7:10 PM BST!

It’s an incredible event to witness, but we want to make sure you enjoy it safely:

⚠️ Standard sunglasses are NOT safe for solar eclipse viewing. No matter how dark your lenses or UV-coatings are, ordinary sunglasses do not block the intense radiation that causes permanent retinal damage (solar retinopathy).

How to watch safely:

✅ Certified Eclipse Glasses: Only use ISO 12312-2 certified solar eclipse viewers. Check that the filters are completely free of scratches or tears.

✅ Indirect Viewing: Make a simple pinhole projector using two pieces of paper or card, or project the shadow through a colander onto the ground!

❌ Never look at the Sun through cameras, binoculars, or telescopes without specialist professional solar filters attached to the front lens.

We are thrilled to announce the addition to the Hing Opticians family - our optometrist Emma and her husband Dom have welcomed baby Sienna. Mum and baby are doing very well and we cannot wait for baby cuddles as soon as possible - she is going to have so many honorary aunties. Xx

*Keep your specs cool!* 😎

At the weekend I was sporting my lovely polarised sunnies, wearing suncream and avoiding direct sun. Didn't burn so I was on to a winer....my spectacles however were in their case in my bag, in the sun. They got HOT!! The lenses will have expanded and contracted and they are ruined. This is a first for me, I don't leave them in the car, I avoid window sills etc.
So lesson learned....if they aren't on your face, they need to stay in the shade!
